You know the television commercial in which the man with an upset stomach moans, ‘I can’t believe I ate the whole thing,’ then pops a couple of Alka Seltzers?

It would have taken a boatload worth of Bromo to put out the fire in Will Greenway’s tummy. The blue-haired lad ate five half-ounce balls of Wasabi in less than 20 seconds to destroy the competition at the 2nd Annual Mamasake Hand Roll and Wasabi Contest. Meanwhile Ryan Maillot captured 1st in the sushi eating contest by devouring five phat-looking ahi handrolls in 2:12 minutes during the final heat of competition.

Held under sunny skies on the outdoor patio of Mamasake organizers might want to rename the contest ‘Hurl Fest.’ With gift certificates, lift tickets and swag at stake, several competitors poured out their bile into nearby hurl buckets while mothers in the large crowd of spectators shielded their children’s eyes, dogs brayed and courageous judges, well, judged if it was a hurl or dry heave. I saw no women becoming euphoric as the all-male heats ate their food with the barbaric ferocity of a Viking. One guy, cheeks puffed out like a hooked Mackinaw trout, spewed rice out of his nose while trying to keep from barfing. Judges allowed him to stay in the competition. Only hurling out of one’s mouth allowed for disqualification. This provoked a predictable response from the lunatic fringe, but of course, what the judges declared was true. The rules state, only hurling, not snot egression, disqualify a contestant.

On that fateful Thursday, March 8, superstars Will and Ryan did for hurling and eating what Frank Sinatra did for singers, what the Beatles did for rock groups, what Tiger has done for golf and what the Babe did for baseball – they transcended the world of their counterparts and changed the face of eating competitions.

They were also immediately granted spots for the Mamasake Nationals to be held April 20. God bless the Mamasake Handroll and Wasabi Eating Contest. Hurl on!

The event starts at 3 p.m. on the Mamasake patio. Registration begins at 2 p.m. The contest is limited to the first 16 entries in each category. There is a $10 registration fee. The public is invited to attend this eye-watering competition. All ages are welcome.

Get Raw At Squaw: The Mamasake Sushi And Wasabi Eating Nationals on April 20
Wasabi eating samurai Will Greenleaf and sushi roll warrior Ryan Maillot, fresh from their astounding domination at the March 8 regional qualifier at Mamasake, return to defend their titles.
Squaw’s Sushi restaurant’s annual competition consists of two categories:
1) The sushi-eating contest pits the contestant against the clock and a lot of sushi. The competitor who devours the most handrolls within five minutes running time claims the top podium.
2) During the wasabi eating event competitors go head to head chewing increasing amounts of wasabi until a winner has left his opponent crying in their sake.

These contests are sponsored by Snowbomb.com, Mamasake, The Village at Squaw Valley, Hemp Ale, Squaw Valley Ski Corp, and Snowtribe Productions. For information call 530-584-6266.
