It’s a powder day. You wake up early, jump out of bed, throw on your gear, grab your skis, and run out the door. What about breakfast? That nutritious early-morning meal that will jumpstart your day, but if forgotten will surely make you crash before you’re ready. For this month’s QuickBites, we rounded up a selection of our favorite grab-and-go sandwiches for breakfast.

The Breakfast Sandwich ($6) at Trokay Caf’ is not on the menu. It’s a secret. But they said I could let you in on this special treat. It features a homemade sausage patty made with Mojave sage from a local farm. Owners John and Nyna Weatherson then drizzle melted Gruyere cheese, stack your style of egg, and shelter it all with a warm, homemade biscuit. My sister ordered chocolate milk and John hand-whipped a dollop of whip cream for a finishing touch — no electricity involved. Then Nyna brought my family a warm-from-the-oven blackberry muffin. Finished with breakfast, we walked outside and saw the light hit the downtown buildings and heard the train whizzing west. What an excellent morning. Info: Open Thursday through Tuesday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Closed on Wednesday. After taking a bite of the Crest Caf”s Bomb Sando ($6.99), you’ll never eat another breakfast burrito again. Filled with eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, and arugula, the Bomb’s special ingredient — vegetable cream cheese — gives it that extra yummy factor while the bacon lends a satisfying crunch. The sando comes on a ciabatta role, but you can substitute a bagel if you like. The Bomb is the perfect thing to fill up on before hitting the slopes or the office. Be sure to grab a napkin, you’ll need it. Info: Breakfast served from 7 to 11:30 a.m. Crest Caf’, 150 Alpine Meadows Rd, Alpine Meadows, (530) 581-3037.’ ~ Melissa Siig/Moonshine Ink
