Promoting cross-cultural understanding and awareness, the Latino Research Center at UNR recently distributed five hundred cameras to Nevada’s Latino community, asking them to tell their stories using photographs investigating the traditions and transitions of their community. Nevada Museum of Art’s exhibit, ‘Nosotros por Nosotros,’ features a selection of submitted photographs and is presented in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Between Women
Browns Eyes Too, the only local theater company in Spanish and the Latin Center of UNR present ‘Between Women,’ a comedy about five ex-schoolmates who meet again after 15 years. Everything seems normal in the life of each one of them, until they begin to dig up dirt from the past and from the present. Monday Night Salsa Party Returns
Dick Howell of OB’s Pub & Restaurant in downtown Truckee has donated his upstairs space for Monday Night Salsa Parties in October. William Flanders of Mountain Salsa Dance sponsors the dance part of the evening, beginning with a brief introductory lesson at 7 p.m. then dancing until 9 p.m. or later.

Free Community Green Waste Drops

The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County in cooperation with Cal Fire, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Truckee Fire, Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal and the Town of Truckee are providing free community green waste drop-off sites in the Truckee area. ‘Having local green waste drop sites allows more time for residents to create defensible space for their communities,’ said Joanne Drummond, Executive Director of the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County. ‘One step inside Lake Tahoe’s only ‘spirit shop’ will put anyone in the mood to spook or sizzle this season,’ said Dress The Part(y)’s owner, Linda Offerdahl, who donates a percentage of all proceeds to local charities. Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum presents its annual symposium which will focus on the first decade of the twentieth century, one filled with momentous events for Nevada Railroads. The V&T extension to Minden, the roads around Tonopah, the Western Pacific, the Nevada Northern and the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake were built during these years and will be topics for presentation. Low Impact Development Training Workshop
October 25 and 26
The Truckee River Watershed Council will host a two-day workshop on Low Impact Development (LID) strategies for stormwater management in the Truckee River watershed. LID’s goal is to mimic a site’s predevelopment hydrology by using design techniques that infiltrate, filter, store, evaporate, and detain runoff close to its source. The workshop will be Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Truckee Town Hall and will focus on planning, engineering and landscape design.
