What’s Ripe Now: Several varieties of apples from Apple Hill, dried heirloom beans, red, gold, and Chioggia beets, celery root, sunchokes, potatoes, and King Richard leeks from Riverdog Farms. There’s also figs, pears, and greens — chard, Bloomsdale spinach, collards, mustard greens, kale, and Del Rio Botanical’s arugula.
What’s Sprouting Next: More apple varieties, mandarins, parsnips, pomegranates, quinces, local winter squash varieties, tangerines, and chanterelle wild mushrooms.
Favorite Bloom: We’re looking forward to amagaki, or cinnamon persimmons, from Twin Peaks Orchard. Brown flecks on the fruit’s flesh contribute to the flavor and marketing of this fruit as cinnamon persimmons. Amagaki persimmons have great a shelf life and are perfect for enjoying right from the tree, and in salads and baking.
