What’s Ripe Now: spring greens including kale, chard, dandelions, arugula, spinach, and mizuna; lettuce of all colors and forms; root crops such as salad radishes, carrots, beets, turnips, and daikon (a white radish).
What’s Sprouting Next: new potatoes with their thin delicate skins and tender, crisp flesh. We are almost done planting the summer crops now that the threat of hard frost is close to being gone. Taking root are tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, squash, cucumbers, pole beans, melons, pumpkins, and summer flowers, all to be harvested in about a month’s time.
Favorite Bloom: The columbine. Shooting sprays of various colors from blue-green mounds of leaves grow up and down our perennial boarders.
