What’s Ripe Now: Summer squash like green zucchini, Zephyr, and yellow straight neck squash. The blackberries have just started to ripen with this warm weather, which is making for an early season and has recently been stressing crops in Grass Valley.
What’s Sprouting Next: Tomatoes, our specialty at the farm. We cannot wait to taste the indigo rose, Copia, pineapple, striped German, Mr. Stripey, indigo cherry, Berkeley tye-dye, and green zebra varieties; we have 30 types of heirloom and cherry tomatoes. Eggplant also comes in right after the first tomatoes.
Favorite Bloom: One of my favorite things to do in the summer with my daughter Amelia is to ride around town and forage on the various wild blooming fruit trees and berries. Figs, apples, wild plums, elderberries, pears, grapes, raspberries, cherries, blackberries, and apricots can be found all over Grass Valley. There always seems to be something blooming locally in the wild.
