Truckee/Tahoe’s local Olympian Julia Mancuso is trying her hand at business. Mancuso recently bought Elevation Fitness in the Pioneer Center in Truckee and is revamping the gym into a state-of-the-art health and exercise center that has been renamed Performance JM.

Mancuso and her crew of employees ripped out the old tanning beds and bought new equipment including dumbbells, kettlebells, jump ropes, and plyometric accessories to supplement the existing equipment in the gym. She is currently remodeling space to host a brand new sports performance and functional fitness training room that will feature a wall of pull-up bars. They’ve cleaned the place spotless and they are offering a new set of memberships to cater to individuals of all fitness levels and incomes.

The evolved space embraces a ‘philosophy of fitness and health,’ said Galen Gifford, Mancuso’s manager, who is overseeing all of the on-the-ground work while the Olympian continues to focus on her skiing career.

‘There are so many professional athletes and people who love the outdoors [in Truckee/Tahoe],’ Gifford said. ‘You need a place like this to train.’

Mancuso’s new gym is located on property owned by her father, Ciro Mancuso. But Gifford said this endeavor is strictly Julia’s.

Skiing remains a priority for Mancuso — she took fifth overall among ladies alpine skiing in the World Cup this year. ‘She’s always working for her sport,’ Gifford said. However, the tiara-donned athlete wants to invest in other endeavors that will expand beyond her skiing career, Gifford said. Besides the gym, Mancuso is also working on a personal lingerie line, Kiss My Tiara.

An opening party for Performance JM will be held on Friday, April 8. Mancuso will be present and discounts on memberships, an open house, and live music will be part of the festivities.
