The Town of Truckee, incorporated in March of 1993, covers nearly 34 square miles and has a population of roughly 16,241. Truckee is governed by five council members, elected at-large for four-year terms, staggered at two-year intervals. This year, one challenger is facing three incumbents.
Moonshine Ink: If you had to pick one accomplishment in your life you are most proud of, what would it be?
Richard Anderson: At 37, I followed my passion and launched California Fly Fisher magazine with little cash or experience in publishing. It’s now 18 years in print.
Mark Brown: After I was licensed as a chiropractor for only five years, I was asked to become an examination commissioner for the State of California Board of Chiropractors. I was responsible for giving examinations and peer review.
Carolyn Dee: Beating stage four breast cancer. It demonstrates the tenacity and courage to face a difficult battle, face adversity, make commitments, and win.
Carl Jeffries: Gaining my biology degree from Humboldt State University at age 38.
MI: What is the biggest issue facing the Town of Truckee right now?
Richard Anderson: The continuing impact of the recession is a huge issue for our community. The town can help reduce its effects by initiating ASAP projects that will employ local contractors and workers, by aggressively pursuing grants to finance more such projects, by strengthening our buy-local policy, and by facilitating entrepreneurial efforts.
Mark Brown: After East West Partners went bankrupt and left Truckee, they left a big economic hole in our town. It was aggravated by the downturn in the U.S. economy. We need to do all we can to get our town positioned to grow in the future.
Carolyn Dee: Without a doubt, the economic downturn. This affects our ability to provide vital services, maintain the quality of life desired by the community, retain businesses, and encourage home ownership. We must find a way to stimulate our recovery, not wait for it to come to us.
Carl Jeffries: The biggest issue facing the town of Truckee is out of the hands of the council. The cutting of teachers in our local schools will have impacts on our children for years to come. Alternative school funding needs to be looked at by our legislature that is outside of economic cycles.
MI: Name three qualities that set you apart from the other candidates?
Richard Anderson: Analytical, skeptical, thorough.
Mark Brown: Compassionate, knowledgeable, humble.
Carolyn Dee: Experience, courage, decisive.
Carl Jeffries: Honest, open, unconventional.
