Officials in Placer and Nevada counties are warning residents to brace for a walloping storm tonight through Sunday afternoon that’s expected to cause flooding along the Truckee River and winds strong enough to knock out power to many locations.

“Storms sometimes bring heavy snow, major power outages, high winds, downed trees, localized stream flooding, back-country avalanches and other challenges,” said Placer County Assistant Director of Emergency Services Rui Cunha. “The effects are tough to predict, so it is important that residents be ready for whatever happens. Preparedness and planning also bring peace of mind.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting that the Truckee River, along Highway 89 and near the Placer/Nevada County line, might exceed flood stage. NOAA predicts the river will reach near eight feet between 3 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Flood stage for this portion of the river is four and a half feet.

They are suggesting that residents along the river set up sandbags to prevent flooding.

The National Weather Service predicts heavy rains later tonight, turning to snow on Sunday. An initial snow level of 9,100 feet is expected to drop to 6,200 feet later in the day with wind gusts as high as 55 mph in some locations.

Residents are urged to store water (a gallon a day per person) and have working flashlights on hand in case of power outages.
