And Number 25 worldwide by Tripadvisor
Lake Tahoe was named the ‘No. 1 Travel Destination in the U.S’ and the ‘No. 25 Destination Worldwide’ by TripAdvisor, an online social network with over 30 million monthly visitors who post reviews and opinions on destinations worldwide. The 2008 Travelers’ Choice Destinations Awards represents the opinions of millions of travelers with winners determined by a combination of voters’ favorite places and overall popularity.
5.1 Million Visit Reno in 2007
The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA) announced that an estimated 5.1 million people visited Washoe County in 2007, according to its annual visitor profile study released in April. The study, conducted by Reno-based market research firm InfoSearch International, details travelers’ visitation patterns, budgets, methods of travel and overall characteristics based on post-trip interview responses provided by 2,400 adults who visited Reno, Sparks and Incline Village in 2007.
California continues to be the primary feeder market, accounting for 48 percent of all visitors. Of those who visited from the Golden State, 19 percent came from the San Francisco Bay Area, 12 percent came from the Central Valley, and 9 percent came from Southern Calif.
The top five activities in which visitors participated while visiting Reno-Tahoe were gaming (85 percent), shopping (56 percent), sightseeing (43 percent), entertainment (33 percent) and visiting friends and family (29 percent). Fifteen percent of respondents indicated that they skied, golfed or engaged in other types of recreation while in Reno-Tahoe.

Politics Needs More Risk-Taking

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will share his views on risk-taking in politics with a Squaw Valley Institute audience. Newsom, who four years ago directed the County Clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has earned a reputation as an innovator who refuses to accept the status quo. Many of Mayor Newsom’s ‘Big City’ accomplishments mirror the needs of our own mountain community, including concerns over high-quality healthcare, excellence and availability of education for schoolchildren and college students, affordable housing, and multiple approaches to sustaining and enhancing the environment.
