Sierra College Breaks Ground at McIver Hill
In accordance with pomp and circumstance, Sierra College Superintendent/President Dr. Leo E. Chavez welcomed community members, Truckee Town council members, architects, and Sierra College staff, at a groundbreaking ceremony on August 6 in Truckee. After Chavez’s opening remarks, longtime Truckee locals Dave Ferrari, Sierra College Trustee (pictured at right) and Perry Norris, Executive Director, Truckee Donner Land Trust (left), shared some stories of old Truckee and then expressed their delight in working with a variety of groups to bring this college campus to fruition. Lastly, Owen Letcher of Lionakis Beaumont Design Group, architects of the new campus, thanked a variety of organizations for their input and efforts and walked many attendees through the foundation as he described the layout of the building. The opening of the campus is scheduled for January 2009.
Tour and learn about Teichert mining operations

Due to increased interest in the mining work of Teichert Aggregrates, the company is inviting the public to come learn more about its operations. Teichert currently has three mine sites permitted in the area. For the last two years the company has developed a community program directed to coincide with the curriculum of the local students. A piece of this program involves a tour of the plant sites. Interest has been expressed in a ‘grown-up’ version of this tour.
Thus Teichert is cordially inviting you to attend this first-time event. There will be three tours of 20 at the Martis Valley pit at 9 a.m, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Present will be Teichert staff from Geology, Habitat Restoration, Environmental Engineering, Land Development and Plant Operations Management. Teichert has also invited some of the agencies that are part of the mining permitting process. Teichert says it hopes to answer some of the questions many in the community have about the company’s product, demand, and responsibility to the community and the environment. Downtown Tipsy Tuesdays
On Tuesday, July 31, the first of nine ‘Downtown Truckee Tuesdays’ kicked off with live music, sidewalk sales, free balloons for kids, restaurant specials, and other thrills. If you missed the festivities, don’t worry. There are eight more sessions on the way.
The Truckee Downtown Merchants Association has organized a series of events designed to highlight their area as a fun and inviting place for friends and families to gather.
Through the last week of September, those who venture downtown on Tuesdays will be offered a variety of specials and discounts at local businesses.
Diners at the Squeeze In will be treated to free mimosas with their breakfasts, anyone who manages to climb to The Tree House will be rewarded with wine, juice, and a 50-percent-off rack, and those who forage Down By The River will discover trays of wine and cheese beside the racks of discounted swimwear.
Chase International won’t be marking down its listings, but potential patrons will be offered a sip or two. Those who manage to find the door can walk it off on the historic building tour offered by First Realty (First Realty will only be serving candy and other snacks).
As the stars come out Moody’s will begin offering half price wine and beer with dinner, and until 9 p.m., Joanne’s Stained Glass and Gallery will pass out cheese and wine as well.
If you’re fit to drive afterwards, a variety of shops will reimburse your parking fee. If you’re not quite up to it you can grope for your soused spouse, take advantage of the two-for-one kayak rentals at The Sports Exchange, and paddle the heck out of town.

Tahoe Community hosts blood drive
On Aug. 15, from noon to 6 p.m., the Tahoe City community will host a BloodSource blood drive at the Tahoe City Fire Station. All participants will receive a coupon for a free pint of Baskin-Robbins ice cream. For info, 800-995-4420 x11009.

The 2007 Contractor Directory includes more than 200 names of local builders, associated professionals, suppliers, and others involved with the construction industry in the Truckee/North Tahoe region. A new map of North Tahoe neighborhoods
The North Lake Tahoe Visitors Bureaus began distributing a promotional piece this summer that distinguishes the various neighborhoods that comprise the North Lake Tahoe region. The brochure, which is designed under the bureaus’ current ‘N is for North’ branding campaign, highlights the 11 distinct areas throughout North Lake Tahoe – Alpine Meadows, Carnelian Bay, Crystal Bay, Incline Village, Kings Beach, Northstar, Squaw Valley, Tahoe City, Tahoe Vista, Truckee and the West Shore.
‘Our goal was to illustrate all the unique qualities and traits of North Lake Tahoe,’ said Andy Chapman, tourism director of the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association (NLTRA).
The location of each neighborhood is displayed on an aerial photo of North Lake Tahoe, accompanied with a short description of the area. Icons symbolizing recreational opportunities, parks, historical sites, dining, lodging, entertainment and activities are also displayed.
The North Lake Tahoe Visitors Bureaus’ website, GoTahoeNorth.com, also features a section about the 11 area neighborhoods.
