I took a hike out in Negro Canyon recently when my hiking partner and I came across a large amount of trash dumped by seemingly very inconsiderate people. A tattered couch sat amongst a broken glass door and several piles of toilet paper. Old oilcans were scattered beneath a tree and metal benches were thrown next to a streambed.
Fortunately, in late June, the Truckee Donner Land Trust (TDLT) partnered with Royal Gorge LLC in cleaning up a large amount of the trash in the canyon. Royal Gorge, the owner of 448 acres in the western half of Negro Canyon, paid for the clean up. The Land Trust owns 280 acres in the eastern half of the canyon.
They also are posting signs saying ‘No Camping, Dumping, and Fires.’ Such signage has helped solved the trash issue in other Land Trust properties, such as Jackass Ridge, said Sara Taddo, TDLT Land Conservation Director.
