Truckee artist Troy Corliss has teamed up with Mountain Forge, Inc. and JMC Industrial Finishing to produce an ambitious new sculpture for the streetscape and entrance of a new Target store in Sunnyvale, Calif. The three Truckee businesses are hard at work in the Pioneer Industrial Center to meet a late October installation date and the store’s mid-November grand opening.
The project is a result of the City of Sunnyvale’s ‘one percent art in private development’ ordinance, with the stated goal of producing a unique identity of place and adding character to highly visible public spaces.
Fourteen large, freestanding, forged steel flower sculptures will adorn the new two-story, 180,000 square-foot store in the heart of downtown Sunnyvale. Each steel flower will stand between 22- and 26-feet tall and will appear to grow out of the concrete sidewalk. Corliss, who designed the flowers, envisions the art as something that helps to define the character of the space outside the store by creating an experience of discovery for viewers.
