A petition that was quickly drafted and promoted by Glenshire residents seems to have worked its charms on the developers of Canyon Springs. The Town of Truckee released a Draft Environmental Impact (DEIR) Report for the project in late April. The 289-acre development proposed 213 home sites on the eastern edge of Glenshire. Immediately, concerned residents began urging the town to drastically decrease the allowable density and to review the document under Truckee’s recently adopted general plan.
Approximately 500 signatures were obtained on a petition urging the project be reviewed under the current general plan, rather than the 1996 Truckee General Plan which uses traffic data from 1992. At the May 23 Truckee Planning Commission meeting, an estimated 120 residents filled the Town Hall chambers while the project applicant withdrew the current DEIR from public comment, and agreed to re-submit the project under the current Truckee General Plan. A new document is forthcoming. There will be a new 45-day comment period once the new version of the DEIR is available. Comments submitted for the first DEIR are now void.
Glenshire residents and neighbors have numerous concerns, but are centered primarily on increased traffic, lack of existing infrastructure, destruction of pristine environment, disrupted deer migration, and possible reduction in property values. Many of these issues were also raised in the previously released DEIR.
