Truckee Meat Company Opens
Clent and Linda Clark opened Truckee Meat Company on May 29, and offer meat from “all four-legged creatures,” including lamb, goat, veal, pork, beef, and rabbit. They also carry organ meats, heads, tails, and feet. All of their products are organic or natural, and sourced from small family farms. Their smoked products are nitrate-free, and meats are dry-aged in-house. Customers can also get house-made sausages and heirloom red waddle Berkshire cross pig from Carmel Valley at the shop. “We utilize USDA Mobile Slaughter Units wherever possible, limiting stress on animals, as well as potential for contamination,” Linda said. Clent, who grew up on a ranch in Carmel Valley and is the shop’s butcher, has more than 45 years of experience in agriculture, ranching, animal husbandry, hunting, and meat cutting. Tahoe City Liquor Store Changes Name, Adds Beer Bar
Lorne Calhoun and his wife, Michiko Calhoun, bought Lakeview Wine and Spirits in Tahoe City online in December and moved to Tahoe from Los Angeles. The couple changed the name of the liquor store to Sips in June, and added a craft beer tasting bar and hot panini sandwiches. Customers will be able to order 4-ounce tasting flights, choosing from the dozen random, hard-to-find, rotating beers on tap. Calhoun said the store will also have a more curated selection of hand-chosen bottles and a section of 90 point reviewed wines for around $20 and under. Myths and Mountains Wins Ethical Travel Award
Incline Village-based Myths and Mountains, an award-winning experiential tour operator offering active lifestyle trips in Asia, Southeast Asia, and South America, was named winner of the ninth annual Observer Ethical Awards’ travel category in June. Myths and Mountains, along with the READ Global Program, was the only American company nominated for an award sponsored by The Guardian, one of England’s most prominent and trusted news sources. The Observer Ethical Awards Ceremony, dubbed The Green Oscars, took place in London on June 11. Sponsored by Virgin Airlines, the competition was voted upon by both a panel of judges and the public. “We at Myths and Mountains are honored to be chosen for this award,” said founder Dr. Antonia Neubauer. “True sustainability is a hallmark of READ — economic prosperity through a business generating income, social viability through village ownership and empowerment, and continuous educational development through the knowledge the program inspires.” See story on mountaineer Melissa Arnot, who is speaking at a READ Global fundraiser in August, here. Truckee Receives Social Media Award
Designed to acknowledge marketing excellence within the community, the Reno Tahoe AMA (American Marketing Association) Ace Awards celebrates the best marketing strategies of the year. Taking home the coveted Best in Social Media marketing award was the #TruckeeMoments hashtag campaign. Working on behalf of the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce, the campaign was developed and implemented by Out&About Marketing and launched in Spring 2014.
The campaign was designed to leverage the town’s popularity while increasing engagement on social media. Originally created as a 30-day contest on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, the campaign inspired locals and visitors to share their favorite Truckee experiences and their passion for the community. It quickly became apparent that #TruckeeMoments had taken hold and become an endless addiction for locals and visitors to show their love of all things Truckee. At that point, #TruckeeMoments transitioned to an ongoing social media movement.
