Donor Network West Leads Liver Donations Using Cutting-Edge Technology

RENO

There are more than 650 people across northern Nevada and northern California who are waiting for a life-saving liver transplant. Nationally, the average waiting time for a liver transplant can vary anywhere from 30 days to more than 5 years.

In addressing the need for increased liver transplantations, Donor Network West launched the use of the OrganOx metra in July 2024 across its service area in northern Nevada and northern California. OrganOx metra is a cutting-edge liver preservation machine that increases the number of donor livers available for transplantation by maintaining liver function during testing and transport, and can improve outcomes for transplant recipients. Since July, Donor Network West facilitated the donation of 16 livers that have been preserved using the machine, which were transplanted to patients in need.

While many organs may still be successfully transplanted using the traditional static cold preservation, the OrganOx metra will enable more livers to be viable for transplant from the same number of donors. The OrganOx metra is particularly useful for donor livers that may present higher risks post-transplant, such as livers from older donors or livers with higher amounts of fat content.

Alpenglow Sports and Alibi Ale Works Announce Partnership

TAHOE CITY

Alpenglow Sports and Alibi Ale Works announced its partnership for Mountainfilm on Tour North Lake Tahoe, and the 2024/25 Alpenglow Sports Winter Speaker Series season.

As a result, Alibi beer and the new hop-infused sparkling water, Hoppy Hour, will be available for purchase at all Alpenglow Sports events. All proceeds from beer purchases benefit the respective nonprofit beneficiaries of each event.

Alpenglow Sports seeks to inspire others to do what inspires them through rich and connected community-centric experiences. One example of this is its Winter Speaker Series. With over 3,500 attendees annually, the 19-year-old event has become one of the premier North American forums for adventure storytelling and community gathering. Another goal central to the Winter Speaker Series is to raise funds for nonprofit organizations making a tangible difference in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee. To date, the event has raised nearly $2,000,000 and supported 50 to 60 individual organizations.

This partnership will kick off on Nov. 1 and 2 at Mountainfilm on Tour North Lake Tahoe. The 2-night programming will feature films that relate to themes including adventure, social justice, environment, and the human spirit. Both nights will benefit the local nonprofit Truckee Roundhouse. Tickets are available at alpenglowsports.com/pages/mountainfilm-on-tour
