Invasive Golden Mussel Found Near Stockton, Tahoe on High Alert
LAKE TAHOE
California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) discovered golden mussels that could significantly damage the ecology of waterbodies in the Bay-Delta near Stockton, California. Lake Tahoe is now on high alert, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). It is the first time the species has been detected in North America.
Under the Lake Tahoe Watercraft Inspection Program, every motorized watercraft is inspected, and if need be, decontaminated before launch. Non-motorized paddle craft can also opt for a free inspection. Since 2008, staff has inspected 113,000 boats for aquatic invasive species, which can have devastating environmental and economic impacts.
This species is known to have similarly negative ecological and recreational impacts as quagga and zebra mussels, both of which have never been detected in Lake Tahoe.
The California Department of Water Resources is preparing a rapid response that includes additional monitoring to determine the extent of the population and managing potential vectors.

Placer County Launches New Website for Local Military Discounts
AUBURN
Placer County has launched a new military appreciation website summarizing local business discounts available to veterans and active military personnel. Additionally, the county is joining Operation Greenlight, a national initiative encouraging residents to shine green lights in support of veterans.
As part of Operation Greenlight, the board of supervisors passed a proclamation and will light the colonnade of Placer County’s historic courthouse in Auburn green from Nov. 1 to 11. Placer County is home to more than 27,000 veterans.
The county has also launched a website listing local businesses, including in the Tahoe area, offering veteran discounts, to make it easier for veterans to take advantage of special offers on everything from dining to services and hospitality, available at placer.ca.gov/9955/local-military-discounts. Local businesses can also submit their own information to be included. Veterans are encouraged to contact businesses to verify current offers.

Buy a Lake Tahoe License Plate and Ski Free at Tahoe Resorts
TAHOE CITY
‘Plates for Powder,’ the program that offers free skiing and riding opportunities to those who purchase a Lake Tahoe license plate, returns for the 2024/25 winter season. Proceeds from plate sales and renewals support environmental improvement projects in the Lake Tahoe Basin and help protect Tahoe’s clear blue waters, mountain forests, world-class recreation, and public beaches.
Through the program, California and Nevada drivers who buy a new Lake Tahoe license plate before April 1, 2025, receive a free lift ticket or trail pass valid at one of 11 Tahoe-area resorts, while supplies last. The ticket must be used during the 2024/25 winter season (some restrictions apply). Participating resorts include: Boreal, Diamond Peak, Heavenly, Kirkwood, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, Northstar California, Palisades Tahoe, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, Tahoe Donner XC, and Tahoe XC.
The Tahoe Fund has organized the Plates for Powder program on behalf of the California Tahoe Conservancy and Nevada Division of State Lands for more than a decade.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe to Open Nov. 8
RENO
Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe will be the first Tahoe area resort to kick off the 2024/25 winter season when it opens Friday, Nov. 8. Early season snow, ideal temperatures that have allowed the resort to fire up its extensive snowmaking system, and the fact that Mt. Rose has the highest base area elevation at 8,260 feet have all contributed to the resort’s ability to get skiers and riders on snow for some of their first turns of the season.
For opening weekend, planned lift operations include the Lakeview Express and the Magic Conveyor from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Open trails will include Kit Carson Traverse, Kit Carson Bowl, Ponderosa, and Show-Off. Skiers and riders should anticipate early season conditions and snowmaking operations in progress. As snowmaking continues and winter weather continues, the resort expects to open more terrain quickly.
More terrain is expected to open soon as snowmaking continues.
