Alpine Meadows Closing Day

Come enjoy the last lift-served skiing in the Tahoe Basin at Alpine Meadows. Lifts will be spinning 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with live music rockin’ on the sun deck all-day long. The legendary Mad Cow Downhill race will kick off just after 2 p.m., challenging racers to find the fastest way down to the lodge from the top of Summit Chair. The first contestant in both ski and snowboard divisions will win a 2010–11 Midweek plus Sunday season pass. Free race registration will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. on the sun deck. Tahoe LUNA Chix Group Bike Rides
Starting Tuesday May 25
Get back in the saddle with the Tahoe LUNA Chix on one of their upcoming group bike rides. This women’s cycling club pedals both road and trail and is open to riders of all abilities. The first LUNA off-road ride of the season is Tuesday, May 25 at the Emigrant Trail on Highway 89. Meeting time 5:45 p.m. for this beginner-level ride. Tuesday, June 8 the LUNA Chix will head out on a group road ride along Boca Reservoir. Ride starts one mile north of I-80 on Hirschdale road at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, June 12 the LUNA Chix will visit the Northstar Bike Park for some downhill mountain biking thrills. Riders should meet at the Chocolate Bar at 11 a.m. Ride is free, but a Northstar lift ticket is not included. Head back to Northstar on Sunday, June 13 when the LUNA Chix host a road bike maintenance clinic, group ride, and private shopping event at Northstar’s Plaza Bike Shop. Northstar Mountain Bike Park Update
Opens Friday June 11
The Northstar-at-Tahoe Mountain Bike Park is seriously upping the ante for the 2010 season with several exciting announcements including expanded trail maintenance, daily instruction opportunities, and a return to daily operations during core summer months. The park will introduce a new teaching area and offer two class levels daily: ‘Ride 101’ for beginners and ‘Bends and Bumps’ for intermediates. The resort will also invest 200 hours per week into trail maintenance (a 500-percent increase) and host a race series in four different disciplines: Downhill, Super D, Dual-Slalom, and Cross Country. An adult lift ticket is $42 while a season pass is $279. Conditions permitting, the Northstar Bike Park will begin Friday through Sunday operation on June 11, continuing through Oct. 17. Daily operation starts July 2 and runs through Labor Day. Lifts will spin 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays. Also, don’t miss the Pro Gravity Tour, a professional downhill bike race series coming to Northstar on June 26 and 27. Info: northstarattahoe.com
Tour de Nez Bike Race and Expo
June 17 to 20
The Tour de Nez professional cycling stage race returns to Tahoe/Reno beginning with the Sparks Nugget Prologue time trial and the National Handcycle Championship. Time trial racers will ride right off a craps table and around the Sparks marina. The pro race continues with a downtown Reno circuit race on Friday and a Northstar Village circuit race on Saturday.
