Sierra Mountain Soccer Club Hosts Tournament
Sept. 5 to 7
The Sierra Mountain Soccer Club is hosting the first Annual SMSC Tournament at the Riverview Sports Complex in Truckee. As many as 40 teams from Nevada, California, Utah and Idaho are expected to attend with boys and girls age divisions U-10 to U-14. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the SMSC scholarship program which supports 28 percent of its members. SMSC is looking for tournament sponsors who are interested in making this first ever youth soccer event in the Truckee/North Tahoe area an annual event. Thunderbird Lodge and Tahoe Water Trail Kayak Tours
Tuesdays
Experience the beauty and history of Lake Tahoe like you have never seen it before by participating in two new kayak trips with the Tahoe Adventure Company. Every Tuesday, TAC in conjunction with the Thunderbird Lodge will host a kayak trip on Lake Tahoe’s East Shore from Sand Harbor to the Thunderbird Lodge. The three-mile trip includes kayak equipment, tour of the 1930s estate, and deli spread lunch. Trip costs $129 and runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those looking for a longer water adventure should sign up for one of TAC’s multi-day Lodge to Lodge kayak trips on Sept. 24 to 27 and Oct. 1 to 4. The kayak and stay package includes four days of paddling the Tahoe Water Trail starting on the West Shore and finishing on the East Shore. Pick-Up Hockey At Squaw Valley’s High Camp

Calling all experienced Icemen! Pick-up hockey games are happening every week at the Squaw Valley High Camp ice rink. To bang sticks at 8,200 feet you’ll need to bring your own equipment and be sure to catch the ‘Hockey Tram’ as the rink is only accessible by Cable Car. The last Wednesday evening session will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 19, after which pick-up hockey will be moving to Sun. mornings at 9 a.m. For the Wed. evening session the tram leaves at 7 and 7:20 p.m., while for the Sun. sessions the tram leaves at 8:30 a.m. Players should arrive 15 minutes before the tram time to purchase a hockey ticket for $15 – goalies play for $5. XTERRA Nevada is back
Aug. 29
The famed XTERRA Nevada off-road triathlon is returning to Incline Village August 29. Home to the XTERRA National Championships for several years, the Incline course starts in the crystal waters of Lake Tahoe before riding up Tunnel Creek to the Tahoe Rim Trail via the Flume Trail and finishing with a challenging run through a pine forest. There will be two race formats – long course and short course. Long course is 1,200-meter swim, 22-mile bike and 6-mile run. Short course has half the swimming and running. Tahoe Sierra 50/100 Ultra Mountain Bike Race

Sept. 12
The most rugged and remote mountain bike race ever held in the Sierra kicks off Sept. 12 at Soda Springs Resort. The Tahoe Sierra 50/100 Mountain Bike Endurance Race will test the mettle of participants in both 50- and 100-mile divisions with riders pedaling from Soda Springs down into the American River Canyon on 19th century mining roads and trails. The course climbs 13,000 feet over the 100 miles. Winning racers should finish in approximately 7.5 hours with a cutoff time of 14 hours. Info and race registration: globalbiorhythmevents.com.

Wolfdale’s Bocce Ball League

Though famed for its Asian fusion cuisine, Wolfdale’s restaurant in Tahoe City spiced up their lower garden plaza last summer with a zesty Italian seasoning – they installed a legal sized Bocce court. The new courtyard will host its first Bocce bowling league on Thursday evenings starting Aug. 13. The four-week league is open to teams of two to eight players with a $50 league entry fee. Each team plays two games to nine points each night. Teams receive a complimentary appetizer plate each week and special ‘Bocce Bites’ may be ordered to the courtyard. Truckee Running Club

Searching for a running partner? Look no further than the Truckee Running Club, a group of like-minded trail and pavement pounders who hook up for weekly runs and a bi-monthly underground race series. Group runs take off every Thurs. and Sun. with races on the first and third Thurs. of the month. The races are open to runners, joggers, and walkers of all levels and abilities with one trail and one paved race per month. North Tahoe Disc Golf Community Update
Four disc golf tournaments remain on the local calendar including the Tahoe Pro/Am at Bijou on Aug. 22 and 23, the Zephyr Cove Pro/Am on Sept. 12 and 13, the Sports Exchange Hula Bowl in Truckee on Sept. 26 and 27 and the Tahoe Mountain Sports Pro/Am in Tahoe Vista on October 3 and 4. Northstar Bike Park Update
Only a handful of opportunities left to get racing at the Northstar Bike Park. The last Thursday night cross-country race of the season jumps off Aug. 20. Registration at 5 p.m., race starts at 6 p.m. sharp. The Super D series finale is Saturday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. This new Super D series is an endurance race that tests both fitness and bike handling on a downhill course with some flat sections. Two more downhill races are on the calendar with racers taking on the Boondocks trail Sunday, Sept. 20 and the Live Wire trail Sunday, Oct. 4.
