Donner Lake Turkey Trot Fun Run

Make a little more room for pumpkin pie running in the 33rd annual Donner Lake Turkey Trot. The seven-mile fun run takes off from the West End Beach parking lot of Donner Lake at 10:30 a.m. and runs counterclockwise around the lake on paved roads. Just prior to the main race younger runners can run the Mashed Potato Mile at 10:15 a.m. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. Event registration is from 9 to 10 a.m. on race day with a fee of $15 for adults, $20 for 18 and younger, and $5 for the Mashed Potato Mile. First Annual Backcountry Ball

Sugar Bowl and local guide service Alpine Skills International are celebrating the opening of ASI’s Backcountry Adventure Center with a season opening bash from 5 to 10 p.m. in the Lodge at Sugar Bowl. The Backcountry Ball will feature a Hutte-style buffet, cash bar, prizes and live music by The Crawlers. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at The Backcountry in Truckee. Info:

Truckee Adult Lap Swim Pool Schedule

Sad but true, ‘tis the season to swim indoors. But just like the local lakes, the Truckee Public Pool offers adult lap swimming seven days a week. Drop-in pool fee is $3 for adults. Indoor Kayak Practice Sessions
Few sporting techniques are as important or as difficult as a kayak roll. Get practicing for next spring at the Truckee Community Pool this winter. Every Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., one half of the pool will be available for kayak roll practice. Lifeguards will be on duty but no official instruction is provided. Truckee Adult Basketball Open Gym
Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
If you’ve got no time for a league but still wanna ball, the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District is offering adult drop-in basketball three days a week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Veterans Building in downtown Truckee. Truckee Drop-In Volleyball

Ski Resort Openings
You’ve waited long enough – it’s time to hit the slopes! While Boreal Mountain Resort is now open daily, several other local resorts are hoping to start spinning their lifts soon, weather and conditions permitting. Squaw Valley USA, Sugar Bowl and Northstar-At-Tahoe are scheduled to open Nov. 21 with Alpine Meadows following suit on Dec. 5 and Diamond Peak on Dec. 10. If you want to start shredding immediately, Boreal’s Castle Peak Quad is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers a legit terrain park. Info:, 530-426-3666.
