Spring is here and summer is just around the corner. For me, that means it’s finally time to take advantage of the weather and the extra daylight by sitting on a porch with two things: someone you can laugh with and a pitcher of something cold. One of the best porch-sitting drinks is a Pimm’s No. 1 Cup.

According to legend (aka Wikipedia), Pimm’s was first produced in 1823 by James Pimm, a man from Kent, England. Pimm offered the tonic (a gin-based drink containing quinine and a secret mixture of herbs) as an aid to digestion, serving it in a small tankard known as a ‘No. 1 Cup.’ By 1851, Pimm’s was in large-scale production mode. Although it may be a popular drink in other parts of the world (including being one of two traditional drinks at Wimbledon), Pimm’s is a little hard to find locally. Save a trip to Reno, the only place to pick up the delicious libation is at Lakeview Wine and Spirits, 599 North Lake Boulevard, Tahoe City, (530) 581-3311. But in my opinion, something you have to work a little harder for is usually worth the end result. When the day is warm and work is far from your mind, mix up this refreshing treat.

1 750ml bottle Pimm’s
2 lemons, sliced
1 bunch mint
1 16 oz. carton strawberries, sliced
1 ginger ale (10 oz. bottle per person)
Ice

Muddle mint, strawberries, and lemon. Top with ice and a ratio of 1/3 Pimm’s to 2/3 ginger ale. Stir and enjoy.

*Substitutions include lemonade or soda water for ginger ale, and cucumbers for strawberries. Additionally, vodka can be added for an extra kick.
