Multicultural Valentine’s Salsa Dance

Family Night: The Amazing Race

The whole family is invited to the Boys and Girls Club in King’s Beach for a scavenger hunt style race filled with challenging tasks and puzzles everyone can do together. Grassroots Climate Movement
Environmental writer Bill McKibben is organizing a response to global warming with a small group in Vermont. The project is called Step It Up 2007, and the idea is this: ‘on Saturday, April 14, we’ll kick off the approach to Earth Day with hundreds upon hundreds of simultaneous rallies all across America, designed to start pressuring Congress to take decisive action on climate change.’
Americans will gather on the levees of the Ninth Ward, on the dwindling glaciers of Mt. Rainier, in city parks, and perhaps on the patchy slopes of a famous ski resort. On April 15, Step It Up will link pictures of the protests together on the web to create ‘the largest protest the country has ever seen, not in numbers but in extent.’
If you want to organize an event, Step It Up will ‘introduce you to other activists in your area and give you everything you need to be a leader,’ from press releases to huge banners that read ‘Step It Up Congress! Cut Carbon 80% by 2050.’

Coordinating water resources
Integrated Regional Water Management Planning (IRWMP) are the latest management strategy to address multiple water issues, coordinate across jurisdictional boundaries, develop high cost-benefit projects, reduce local conflict, and attract funding to your area. A conference is being held March 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to discuss how to launch an IRWMP for the Sierra Nevada. For info, email kathy@sierranevadaalliance.org.
Police Trading Cards
The Truckee Police Department now has baseball style trading cards they are giving out to kids in the community. With 29 cards total, all full-time personnel from the department participated along with two reserve officers. When a child has collected all 29 cards, they are eligible for a raffle to win prizes.
Club Amiguitos on Mondays at KidZone
Club Amiguitos meets every Monday from 10 a.m to 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. This free preschool program is for ages 3 to 5 and sponsored by Nevada County School Readiness. Together with the State Preschool, children will participate in art, science, reading and music activities in Spanish and in English. Space is limited so pre-sign up by calling 587-KIDS.
Design a logo for the Sierra Nevada
The Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC) is hosting a Logo Concept Design Competition open to all students grades 9 through 12 in the Sierra Nevada Region. The competition is calling for artistic and graphic design concepts for possible use by the SNC. The logo competition will run through March 30, 2007. Winners will be announced in May 2007. First prize is $2,500. Winners’ schools will also receive matching arts education awards. There will be other prizes as well. No state funds will be utilized for any of the prizes. Lower cost and six new majors at Sierra College in Truckee
At a time when colleges and universities around the country are raising tuitions, California community colleges are actually lowering their per credit cost. Can you imagine? This spring, Sierra College students will pay $20/credit instead of $26. Woohoo! Maybe it’s time to sign up for that class you’ve always wanted to take. Or, maybe you want to begin the path towards education achievement and enroll in one of the new majors offered at the Truckee campus.
Beginning Fall ’07, Sierra College will institute two year programs for six new majors. Have you always wanted to paint? How about accounting as a new career? There’s even a degree for those with an interest in multimedia. The new two-year Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree programs include Applied Art and Design-Multimedia, Art, Accounting, English, Humanities, and Liberal Arts. Truckee Fire wants you to have smoke detectors
The Truckee Fire Protection District feels so strongly about having working smoke detectors in the home that it is willing to supply battery operated smoke detectors to the members of its district that do not have them.
If your smoke detector is more than 10 years old, the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) as well as most manufacturers recommend that you replace your smoke detector. Lahontan Community Foundation announces the availability of grants for local nonprofit organizations. The deadline for grant application submission is Friday, March 2.
