Cain’s Crossing Renaissance Faire

Update on Youth of the Year
Jasmine Marquez of Kings Beach won Boys and Girls Club California Youth of the Year, and will represent over 500,000 youth that attend Boys and Girls Clubs. Way to go Jasmine. In Design for People and Places, kids ages 8 through 12 (flexible) will be inspired by the Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful exhibit. Run Amuck Fun Run

The fifth annual Reno River Festival introduces a 2.5-mile run that follows the river’s path from the Truckee River Whitewater Park in downtown Reno to Idlewild Park on Idlewild Drive. Runners crawl through a mud pit and face other mystery obstacles while wielding the team’s baton. Costumes are rewarded. Registration is $50 per two-person team and includes a finish-line goodie bag. The festival is May 9 to 11 and attracts athletes from around the world. Northstar Mountain Bike Park Open

Home to the largest mountain bike park in Northern California, Northstar Resort will reopen the mountain bike park for the summer season on Memorial Day weekend, weather and conditions permitting. The bike park will be open on Saturdays and Sundays until June 20 when it will be open daily through September 1, then back to Saturdays and Sundays until October 5. Daily operating hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Leave No Trace Training

Live and learn it in the backcountry. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association has partnered with Leave No Trace’s Traveling Trainers to present a 2-day course, Leave No Trace skills and ethics, and how to apply them. Additionally participants will learn techniques for disseminating these low-impact skills. $65 fee includes a one-year membership to LNT non-profit, certification, educational materials, and cool outdoor products, plus two meals. Shakespeare Festival Seeks Volunteers

The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is seeking volunteers to fill the following positions: amphitheatre host; VIP host; chair booth assistant; greeters; merchandise sales assistant; office crew; set-up work crew; ticket takers and ushers; clean-up crew; and Young Shakespeare assistants. Volunteers support the arts and receive benefits including free Festival tickets, souvenir Festival merchandise, and inclusion in the annual program. This season alternates Richard III with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. On Monday nights a new romantic musical, Cambio, based on Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, takes center stage. Join Mayan filmmaker and teacher Dr. Jose Jaramillo, at the Reno Psychic Institute as he explains the differences between the Gregorian and Mayan calendars and how the different systems affect consciousness. In his film, Jaramillo proposes this: in order for humans to live a better life and to prepare for the changes that, according to Mayan prophecy, will take place in 2012, humans need to change their state of mind to the Mayan calendar, which focuses ‘a new world’ of harmony with nature and the universe.
