Artists in Bloom

Youth Backcountry Camps in July
The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) in partnership with Sierra Nevada Journeys offers four 3-day, 2-night Youth Backcountry Camps as a part of their 2009 summer trail and educational programs. The camps are for young adults ages 14 to18 who want to learn more about backpacking, trail operations, ecology, and outdoor leadership skills in an advanced wilderness setting. Participants will perform a day of service, doing actual trail maintenance under the supervision of experienced TRTA staff. The camps will be held July 13 through15; 16 through18; 19 through 21; and 22 through 24. The July 22 to 24 session is a Latino Youth Backcountry Camp. Each camp has the capacity for 12 students, and will be fully supported by TRTA and SNJ staff. $99 for sessions 1, 2, and 3 (scholarships are available), and $25 for session 4. Gymnastics Camp

My Playground offers co-ed summer gymnastics camps for children ages 6 and older. Kids work on body positions, stretches, flexibility, balance, strength, floor, bar, vault, beam, rings, and trampoline. Curriculum and instruction follow the USA Gymnastics Levels 1 through 4 and USAG Safety Guidelines. Camp includes gymnastics, crafts, team-building, nutrition education, fun, and more. Final demonstration presentation for family and friends on Friday. An afternoon swim option is available with Debbie Meyer, 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist and head of Tahoe-Truckee Swim Team.

Two Summer Reading Programs, ‘Be Creative at Your Library’ and ‘Express Yourself at Your Library,’ encourage kids to keep reading during the school break. Volunteers Needed
The Tahoe Forest Hospital Auxiliary is looking for volunteers to help at the Gift Tree, doing secretarial work, and work at the Main Information Desk. The Child Care Center needs adult volunteers to cuddle in the infant room, assist teachers with projects and students with homework. American Red Cross Volunteers host free CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) training. Each year more than 500,000 Americans die of heart attacks. More than half of the victims die before they reach a hospital. Learn adult CPR, choke rescue, and rescue breathing skills, and earn American Red Cross certification valid for one year. A $10 per person registration/materials fee is due at pre-registration, and will entitle the student to $10 credit towards American Red Cross preparedness merchandise available for sale at the event. Classes begin at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 12 p.m., and last two to three hours. The art and scientific study of interpreting an artist’s drawing of a tree and gaining insight into the artist’s personality. In this class you will learn to do a Tree Reading, the key elements involved, and what those elements tell you about the artist. You’ll use your intuition and develop your own style beginning with a meditative journey to find your authentic self. Learning the art of Dendrographology will help you gain insight into yourself as you do your own Tree Reading. The Art of Living is a practical workshop designed to develop the full potential of life. One of the techniques taught in this course, Sudarshan Kriya, is a powerful yet simple breathing technique that releases stress, negative emotions, and toxins, rejuvenating the body on a cellular level.
