Did you know Truckee is famous for its historic Old Jail Museum that operated until 1964 for 89 years? Did you know the likes of Baby Face Nelson, ‘Machine Gun’’ Kelly, and ‘Ma’ Spanelli and her gang, spent time inside the Truckee ‘slammer?’
Do you find yourself looking for something the entire family can do together that won’t break your bank or deplete the kid’s college fund? Visit a local museum, expose the kids and yourself to the heritage of the community, and become involved in helping to preserve history.
Come take a tour of Truckee’s Old Jail Museum led by Truckee Donner Historical Society (TDHS) volunteer docents, on Saturdays and Sundays (until September 27) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Thursday evenings (until August 20) from 5 to 7 p.m. during Truckee Thursdays street festival. The Old Jail Museum is located at 10142 Jibboom Street near the corner of Jibboom and Spring Streets in historic downtown Truckee. The (suggested) price of admission is quite affordable, $2 per head.
The fifth annual TDHS Ice Cream Social will be held on Saturday, August 15 from11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Memorial Garden located at the Old Jail Museum. Old-fashioned root beer floats and hand-dipped ice cream sundaes, made to order, will be served all day to break the heat. Relax under the shade of the apple tree and read the memorial plaques in the garden.
Afterwards, take a tour of the Old Jail Museum. All proceeds from ice cream sales benefit repairs and upgrades needed at the Old Jail.
