The seventh annual Downtown Truckee Wine, Walk & Shop steering committee recently named Sierra Senior Services as this year’s nonprofit beneficiary.

Sierra Senior Services provides a daily hot nutritious meal primarily to low-income individuals, specifically the most frail and homebound seniors, ensuring that this segment of the population will remain independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. In 2008, the agency served 21,000 meals. Last year, in the face of adverse conditions it served nearly 24,000 meals to seniors and disabled adults in the Truckee community.

‘We had many worthy applicants, it was a hard decision to make,’ said Brinn Wellise, president of Switchback Public Relations + Marketing and owner of the event. ‘We selected Sierra Senior Services because it serves an extremely underserved segment of our population. The funds will be used to provide food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as food supplies necessary to deliver the meals.’

The Downtown Truckee Wine, Walk & Shop has gained momentum in each successive year, donating proceeds to local nonprofit organizations such as InnerRhythms Dance Theatre, Lake Tahoe Music Festival, Humane Society of Truckee/Tahoe, the Truckee High School band program, Glenshire Elementary and Truckee Elementary Special Friends programs, and Tahoe Women’s Services.
