VAGINA. How do you feel when you hear that word? Do you flinch? Do you call vaginas something else? Something less icky, perhaps? The word creates a variety of reactions, so how can a two-hour play about vaginas be anything but attention getting?
V-Day, February 14, is a global movement to stop the violence against women and girls. It is a catalyst to promote events that increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. By focusing attention on the fight to stop the violence, including rape, battery, and incest, V-Day and grassroots activists and organizations hope to incite change.
Productions of Eve Ensler’s ‘The Vagina Monologues’ are a powerful way to carry the message, diving in to the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage, and excitement buried in women’s experiences with their own vaginas. They are real women’s stories collected by Ms. Ensler and assembled into a production that will change the way you see yourself, your lovers, and the women in your life.
For the past five years Tahoe Women’s Services (TWS,) a local organization committed to violence prevention, has produced ‘The Vagina Monologues’ for its North Lake Tahoe audience. And, this year, Ana Maria Vega will direct a special performance in Spanish, ‘Los Monólogos de la Vagina,’ to expand the play’s reach deeper into North Tahoe communities. This event is an opportunity for our community to be part of a collective voice that says ‘NO’ to violence against women and girls.
If you have a vagina, like people who have vaginas, or especially if vaginas make you really uncomfortable, come out and support TWS by experiencing ‘The Vagina Monologues’ at Cal-Neva the weekend before V-Day.
For the Spanish performance on February 16, VIP tickets cost $45, general admission $15 and students $10.
Performances on February 8 and 9 are in English. VIP tickets are $45, general admission $25 and students are $15. All performances are at 7 p.m. at Cal-Neva. Tickets make great Valentines.
