I’ve been wrestling with something other than my sister lately. I’ve been pondering what to call those people I live with.

‘Owner’ just isn’t working for me. There is no guidance in the Moonshine Ink writing guide – that thing is useless in this arena. I tried ‘roommate’ but my ‘owners’ thought that was a little too casual. Besides a roommate usually pays rent (and buys their own food). Rent, that’s pretty funny. Until I come up with something better, I’ll settle on ‘companion.’

My companion, my sister Olive, and I went down to the shelter the other day. I don’t know if they had some kind of clearance sale or what but many of my shelter friends were gone. Zandy, who last month was barking orders at other dogs, has found a home. Arnold, a German Shepard/Saluki mix who I really wanted to meet, seems to have found a nice home also. My friend from last month, Buddy, is still in the house and so is Chester. Chester was featured here a few months ago.

We decided to take him for a walk. Chester still acts like a puppy – a big puppy. Holy smokes! You should see this guy drool when he drinks from the water bowl. Get this boy a bib. Olive and Chester love to wrestle and act immature. Sometimes I think it makes me look less cool hanging out with these excitable dogs. While Chester and Olive were having a lovefest I threw in a growl just to let them know I wasn’t really that impressed. It’s a good thing that Chester is a lover and not a fighter.

We all went to Prosser to play and run around on the ice. It was a beautiful sunny day and we had a blast. We spent a least 45 minutes playing with this sweet stick I found. What a stick it was. It was such a nice stick that the other dogs tried to chase me and take it away. I’m too fast for them so when Chester and Olive got tired I just sat with my stick. I chewed on it and sometimes I threw it up in the air but mostly I just wanted them to notice that I had a stick and they didn’t. Everyone did get a turn running around with the stick but only because I let them.

If you are looking for a big lovable, slobbery guy to wrap your arms around (and ladies, who isn’t?) give Chester a try.
It’s hard being a dog living in a 24-hour news cycle. My ears are always to the ground. That’s why when I heard about two new guests at the Humane Society hotel I had to run down and check it out.

Hank and Lucy are a dynamic brother and sister combo. They are about three years old and look almost identical. We took Hank and Lucy out for a hike and they enjoyed every minute of it. They both have a little extra ‘junk in the trunk’ so some exercise was just what the doctor ordered. My ‘companion’ wanted to let them run but they were a little too adventurous. We figured out that if we just put one of them on a leash that the other could run and play. They took turns and never went too far from one another. These guys are smart and they have speckled legs like mine.

Hank and Lucy stopped over at my house after our walk and behaved like good house guests. After sniffing everything they snuggled together on the floor. These guys have to stay together. If you need two new smart exercise partners, check them out.

If you are interested in Hank and Lucy, Chester or any of the other fine animals at the Humane Society you can always see pictures at hstt.org. If you would like to foster an animal or adopt drop an email to nanettecronk@sbcglobal.net or give a call to 587-5948. Have a great month and remember, ‘Don’t breed or buy while shelter animals die.’
