Poets, painters, and photographers. We are so rich in talent here in Tahoe/Truckee that it’s nearly impossible to measure one piece of art against another. How do you measure the intangible merits of a painting against the beauty of a photograph? A poem against a moving piece of prose?
This was the difficult task our judges took on in Moonshine’s fifth Winter Annual competition.
Our winner in the visual category this year is Court Leve, whose study on ice not only was beautiful, according to the judges, but also “pushed the whole envelope of people’s thinking.”
Running a close second to Leve’s images was the whimsical painting of Aimee Had, who won some hearts with her painting of a dog balancing on a frozen high alpine lake (a fun study in perspective), and Emma Sproehnle’s iPhone images of a frozen creek that had the judges wondering what they were viewing.
Our literary winner, June Saraceno, penned lyrical poems full of “crisp imagery” that inspired the jury. With an incredible range of voices this year, we also want to call readers’ attention to the prose of Susi Lippuner, who writes powerfully about her late mother, and Andrew Pridgen, whose vivid, uncensored voice got the jury sitting up at full attention.
