The magician musician Adam Theis is at it again. This time the Bay Area Jazz Mafia founder is playing with the latest offshoot of the musical collective, Supertaster. Theis takes care of bass, trombone and electronics alongside Jon Monahan (guitar, electronics), Matt Berkeley (keyboards), Joe Bagale (drums, vocals, electronics) and Karyn Paige (vocals). Supertaster hits Truckee on two nights, Dec. 29 and 30, at Moody’s Bistro.
The innovative jazz group had a once in a lifetime experience in late September when their idol Stevie Wonder happened into a club where they were playing and got on stage to jam for a few songs. Theis was quoted as saying: ‘Someone would have to come back from the dead actually, for it to be better than Stevie Wonder.’ Since that fateful night, Supertaster has been busy laying down tracks for an album and playing throughout the Bay Area.
The family tree of jazz spreads far and wide and actual definitions, subgenres and influences have been hotly debated since the first written word of ‘jazz’ in 1913. Theis and the members of Supertaster are well versed in jazz-influenced stylings from pop and rock to hip hop. Paige is heartbreakingly soulful in every note, from originals like ‘Own Thang’ to Wonder’s ‘People Make the World Go Round.’ Bottom line, this five-piece has the chops to sound like a full orchestra and is sure to get even the Scroogiest McBumster up and feelin’ jazzy on one of the nights they are set to play.
