A mixology of high altitude gadfly gossip for oxygen starved brain cells
The annual SnowFest parade in Tahoe City was a hit as usual. It’s a veritable mountain Mardi Gras, Tahoe style. Congrats to all the entry winners, especially the Contractor’s Association of Truckee Tahoe for winning Best overall. Their float consisted of two effigies of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae CEOs, strung by the neck and getting whipped by burley construction dudes wielding papier-mâché hammers. Excellent!
The next big event was the Polar Bear Swim at Gar Woods. What’s with the chicks in wet suits? Isn’t that cheating? That’s like showing up at a foot race with a bicycle. No more wetsuits. Yours truly registered to jump into Tahoe’s icy waters, so I showed up in my water socks and Speedo. Only serious swimmers – and Europeans – wear Speedos you know. So there I was acting all serious in my serious swimwear ingesting some serious body numbing libations, when we were called to the beach. I dove into the ice bath, after which I really don’t remember a thing, except that my bits shriveled up so bad that it took an hour for them to thaw out and for me to find everything again.
The Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation’s Queen of Hearts recently held a luncheon to highlight the importance of philanthropy. These ladies do a lot of great stuff in our area, so keep your eye out for them. Their keynote speaker for the event was none other than Gavin Newsom, dashing Mayor of SFO. Apparently, this was the first time the all-female organization asked a man to speak. You go you Amazons!
Alas, we must end this month’s installment on a sad bittersweet note. Truckee’s best kept secret, Trio Wine Bar, held a farewell party and closed its doors March 6th. Besides the great staff, Trio was special due to its location in the famous Kruger-White House, built in 1874. The Queen Anne Eastlake Victorian building provided clients with elegant parlors, stylish architecture and an utterly unique ambiance in which to relax, enjoy wine and nibblies, and visit with friends. It was also the coolest place ever for private parties, and not to mention, haunted as hell. Because Trio was situated in Brickelltown, west of downtown Truckee, it needed to reach out to the local base like the other businesses in Brickelltown do and advertise. But it didn’t, and sadly remained a best kept secret. Farewell Marcus, Mike, Natasha and the rest of the staff. We wish you luck in finding further employment. You’ve poured your last glass of Syrah and the ghosts will miss the sounds of laughter.
