While people shop the Home Show for floor tiles and Tupperware in one room of the Reno Convention Center, the space across the way vibrates at a decidedly different level. Incense wafts through the air, and vendor booths of a metaphysical nature spill out the door into the hall. Colorful wall hangings tease visitors toward a table filled with New Age music and meditation CDs.

Like a carte du jour outside a restaurant, another table is covered in brochures touting the tempting treats to be found just through the doorway. Tarot Readings, Quantum Healing, Lemurian Crystals and Magick Candles are but a few of the items you’ll find on the menu at the Reno Psychic Fair, October 23 through 25..

Laura Peppard; founder and director of the Reno Psychic Institute and creator of the Reno Psychic Fair likens the event to a smorgasbord. ‘You don’t have to eat anything you don’t want and if you find you have an appetite for something, there’s a need. This gives people an opportunity to get in touch with their intuition.’ One of the main benefits of the event is that people can find tools to help them connect with themselves. It seems there are a lot of spiritually hungry people out there. An average of 1,200 people show up at the fair each year.

Peppard is excited about this year’s fair. She has named it the ‘Planetary Wellness Fair,’ and its theme is ‘Raise the Earth.

Praise the Earth.’ She says; ‘Gratitude creates an upward spiral of energy to help bring things out of the muck. You raise the vibration as you praise the Earth.’ Let’s face it, things are pretty mucky around here. She gives kudos to the ‘Eco-people’ for their wonderful attempts, but says their solutions are missing the spiritual component in ‘mind, body and spirit.’ She supports a solution using energy to heal the spirit (of the earth), and then the mind and body (matter) can heal itself. She talks about healing at the causative level to change the effect. By remembering that we are spiritual beings in material form, we can consciously raise our vibration (or the earth’s) and aid the healing process. There was a time when man honored Earth and revered the spirit in everything. Many of us forgot and began to take her gifts for granted. But it’s not too late.

The internationally renowned Psychic, Reverend PJ Chatterton, will set the intention for the fair by offering the opening ceremony on Friday night. Its focus will be ‘The Wisdom of the Grandmother,’ and attendants are encouraged to bring instruments, drums and other noisemakers to facilitate mother earth’s healing. Reverend PJ has trained with many indigenous teachers, and shares their ancient knowledge with the modern world through her shamanic ceremonial work at events such as the Prophets Conference. ‘She’s a good friend and a lot of fun. I’m sure she’ll surprise me,’ said Peppard about PJ, when I asked what to expect from her.

Peppard’s favorite part of the fair is, ‘once it’s open and people are there.’  She especially loves her family’s participation. Her husband, Arthur, is the author of ‘Tahoe Waters Run Wild,’ an inspiring mystical revelation of Lake Tahoe, and has been a continuous support for the semi-annual fair. This year, their daughter, Iris, Executive Director and creator of ‘Everyone’s Harvest,’ a farmers’ market in Monterey County, will give a composting demonstration and will have the ‘Cadillac of compost bins’ on hand. She will speak on the importance of a community garden, and will also donate pumpkins and squash to the first 25 guests to arrive at the fair each day. (Yes, there will be a pumpkin check.)

Your admission to the fair includes over a dozen seminars and several entertainers, from Astarius’s Didgeridoo Sound Healing concert and Troupe Jasmine Chakra Belly Dance to Tom McCormack, the ‘dream speaker,’ who shares international and Native American healing tales. Peppard will channel healing earth spirits at 1 p.m. on Sunday, and Alan Hardman, Toltec Master, will give a talk on ‘Living in Conscious Relationship’ at 2 p.m.
