Quick Bites: Skiing snacks
For me, a trusty ski snack must not only be hearty, healthy, and packed with energy, it’s gotta travel well, too. A personalized mix of nuts and berries fits the bill perfectly. After years of trolling the bulk aisles of New Moon Natural Foods, I have developed a tasty mix that keeps my tail wagging all day on the hill: organic roasted salted almonds ($9.13/pound), organic roasted salted cashews ($17.15/pound), and dried organic bing cherries ($13.52/pound). Personalize your own mix with the many other great ingredients and countless combinations possible. Other standouts in my book are the dried apricots, sesame sticks (various flavors), and tamari almonds. Open seven days at two locations. 11357 Donner Pass Road, Truckee, (530) 587-7426 or 505 West Lake Boulevard, Tahoe City, (530) 583-7426

For a warm and gooey treat that melts in your mouth, head to Wildflour Baking Company at Squaw Valley for a freshly baked chocolate-chip cookie ($2). Whether it’s bluebird powder or a whiteout blizzard, these treats are sure to hit the spot after any day on the slopes. The recipe for these treats is a secret, but they do use Ghirardelli chocolate chips. If you’re in the mood for something else besides the classic chocolate chip, pick from an assortment of treats on the ‘That Which Cannot Be Named’ tray. These cookies are small enough to fit in your pocket if you want to save one for the lift, but know that your buddy riding the chair next to you will want one, too. Wildflour operates at two locations on the mountain, inside the Olympic House or up top at High Camp. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 1960 Squaw Valley Road, Olympic Valley, wildfloursquaw.com

When the skiing is so good you just can’t stop — not for a bathroom break, not for food — you’ll be happy you stashed a Tahoe Trail Bar ($2.99) in your pocket. The locally made energy bar ‘has been fueling the journey for people who enjoy the outdoors in the Lake Tahoe Basin for 12 years,’ according to the bar’s Facebook page. The bar contains corn flakes, rice syrup, peanut butter, oats, chocolate chips, raisins, craisins, coconut, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seed, and vanilla. Find them at health food stores across the Basin, including Alice’s Mountain Market, where locals can receive a discount. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 1850 Squaw Valley Road, Olympic Valley, (530) 581-2014
