Turkey Trot

The 29th annual Turkey Trot (7.5mi) and the new Mash Potato Mile will be run November 12 around Donner Lake. A fun filled family event to benefit the Auburn Ski Club Junior Nordic Program. Race Registration is at 9 a.m. at the West end Parks and Rec parking lot. Race begins at 10:30 a.m. Registration is a suggested donation $10 for adults and $5 for kids and the cash strapped. Come check out ‘Whatcha Gonna Drive?’ The Future of Transportation event with 20 vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, multi-fuel vehicles, electric cars and trucks, in addition to electric bikes and scooters, and some unique people-powered bikes. We’ll even have a portable biodiesel plant (along with experts to explain it all). The car & bike show and the presentations go from 2 to 6 p.m., and the evening program will start at 6:30 p.m. At The Center for the Arts, 314 W. Main St., Grass Valley. Holiday Open House at Empire Mine State Historic Park

You are invited to attend the annual Holiday Open House at Empire Mine State Historic Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Bourn Cottage and Clubhouse will be decked out in holiday decorations with volunteers in the dress of Christmas in the early 1900s. Cookies and cider served with local harpist, Kurtis Bershaw, performing holiday music in the Cottage. Santa & Mrs. Claus will greet children in the clubhouse. Squaw Thanksjibbin’ Rail Jam

Thanksjibbin’ is an open entry competition with four classes: men’s and women’s ski and snowboard. The Thanksjibbin’ feature is a stair-set with a dual level down box, a flat down rail, and down box with a handrail. Registration and practice is at 11 a.m. and the competition starts at 1 p.m. The competition entry fee is $10 and helmets are mandatory for all competitors. Athletes who are under 18 years must have a parent or guardian present at registration to sign a liability release form. Thanksjibbin’ at Squaw is the first stop for the Toyota Sick & Twisted Series. 7th Annual Learn to Ski and Board Weekend

Cost is $25 and includes an all-day beginner lift ticket, group lesson and gear rental. First-timers have their choice of resorts to learn at including Alpine Meadows, Boreal Mountain Resort, Diamond Peak, Granlibakken, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Squaw Valley USA and Sugar Bowl. Reservations are not required, but participants should arrive early. Lesson packages can be purchased at each individual resort the day of lessons. Students should contact resorts directly for resort-specific information. Shuttle for the Holidays
The new North Lake Tahoe Express daily airport shuttle service begins Wednesday, November 15 (in time for the Thanksgiving holiday) and will be available to and from North Lake Tahoe and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The shuttle will run from 3:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. Fees will be $35 per person, one-way, $60 round trip. Discounts for groups of three or more.
