Queens said ‘Land and Learning’
The powerful group of philanthropic women – you may call them Queens – rounded up by the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation for their Queen of Hearts Fund have spoken. The group, established in 2006, recently voted on where to direct $50,000 and the winners are…. The Truckee Donner Land Trust and the Adventure, Risk and Challenge program (ARC).
The Land Trust will put the money toward a public trail system on the Waddle Ranch property they just purchased. ARC will put it toward giving more English Language Learners the summer experience of a lifetime that combines ropes course training and poetry (among many other things).

If our ski town were a piece of furniture…
What would it be? That was the question posed to 100 people in Crested Butte – local residents and business owners, plus visitors – as part of a branding study being conducted by the ski area operator. The general opinion was that Crested Butte is a hardwood-and-iron bench, same as Telluride.
As for Aspen, those surveyed see it as a fancy, futuristic, over-the-top chair. Steamboat is an average sofa.
The Crested Butte News also notes that those polled asked what they wanted Crested Butte to become. The majority answer was a middle-level Casio watch, rugged, with stainless steel, but not too expensive.

Local Historian Speaks on Desolation
January 17
Don Lane, Tahoe’s beloved historian, has been telling the Tales of Tahoe on the radio at KOWL 1490 for more than ten years. On January 17, at 6:30 p.m., he will speak at a Tahoe Area Sierra Club monthly meeting to speak about Desolation Wilderness, its past, present and future management and what we can do to help keep it pristine. Also, he will speak about local history as he has promised to spin some tales. Lane works for the Forest Service and manages of all of the National Forest campgrounds, beaches, wilderness and backcountry programs. Meeting will be held at Round Hill Fire House in Zephyr Cove, at the corner of Hwy 50 and Elks Point Road, 530-573-1834.

Sierra Senior Services, a local non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of seniors in the Truckee/North Lake Tahoe area, will hold its seventh annual spaghetti dinner, bingo, and silent auction Saturday, February 2, at the Truckee Donner Recreation & Park District Community Center on Church Street in Truckee.
