Renaissance Faire Returns

This weekend is the fourth annual Truckee Renaissance Faire when the Truckee River Regional Park becomes a European country town celebrating the harvest festival, Michaelmas, in the year 1562. More than 60 vendors, entertainers and guilds will invite you to play, so prepare to bow to the Queen, dodge flying peanuts, search for privateer treasures, and outwit jesters not afraid to jest. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. $10 for adult admission. $5 for seniors and wee ones under 12. Local students will need to present coupon received from teacher for special pricing.
One World/Un Mundo Invitational Soccer Tournament
September 16
The Truckee Sunrise Rotary will host the first annual One World/Un Mundo Soccer Tournament. An ice-breaking event to begin to bridge some of the cultural gaps that keep our brothers and sisters from North, South, and Central America from uniting as one here in Truckee. There will be16 adult teams, professional referees, and food and fun for the whole family. Kids can buy $1 tickets to race motorized Daytona Ducks for small prizes. Be a ‘Cardivor’
Dining for Schools Cards went on sale September 1. Buying one will make you a ‘cardivor,’ which entitles you to save 50 percent at select restaurants in the Tahoe-Truckee area.
The cards, a fundraiser for the Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation, cost $45 and are valid at 36 area restaurants, from September 9 through December 13, 2007 and April 20 through June 12, 2008. Select restaurants honor the card during an extended period of January 6 through April 10, 2008. The Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation that supports quality education with the TTUSD.

Thirty-seven thousand candles

Tahoe Big Blue Adventure Race
September 22
The finale of the Big Blue Adventure Series challenges teams to eight-plus miles of kayaking on Lake Tahoe, more than 24 miles of mountain biking with a 5,000-foot elevation gain, five to eight miles of running/hiking and constant use of map and compass skills. Open to teams of two, three or four all male, all female, coed or masters, as well as individuals. The sprint competition, a shorter race is open to teams of two and will coincide with the original event with finishing times of two to four hours. A Year of Goodness

For Goodness Sake (FGS) is celebrating their one-year anniversary on Saturday, September 29 and everyone is invited to the party. For Goodness Sake has already done so much for our community’s growth. The non-denominational, not-for-profit spiritual center has been the host of numerous incredible lectures and classes about how to connect more deeply with ourselves, our neighbors, and our individual beliefs.
‘It provides access to some really cool thought-provoking stuff and community support for being on a spiritual path,’ said Alex Heyman. In June, Immaculee Ilibagiza shared her story, about surviving the Rwandan Holocaust, with a packed house at the North Lake Tahoe Community Center. Few will ever forget her powerful testimony of faith in spite of unbelievable terror and loss. Classes and spiritual groups like Attitudinal Healing and a Course in Miracles at FGS have enriched the lives of community members.
‘It has helped me meet people in the community who are wanting to develop and grow spiritually,’ said Glenshire resident Xaviere Alden. Bring the gang to the party to celebrate one year of good work. Seasons of Martis Exhibit
October 4 to October 29
The North Tahoe/Truckee arts community joins with the Truckee Donner Land Trust to present a month-long, multi-venue exhibition celebrating the 45,000 acres of Martis Valley. North Tahoe Arts, Truckee Gallery, Carmel Gallery, and Riverside Studios exhibit regional artworks and natural history exhibits telling the story of the valley.
‘In this first-of-its kind collaboration, non-profit organizations and galleries are working together to draw attention to a beloved land feature that enhances our sense of place,’ said Laura Read, Exhibits Chair at North Tahoe Arts.
‘Art creates a strong emotional response that can lead to a change in attitude or actions,’ said Teresa Wik, a founding member of Truckee Gallery.
The choice of Martis Valley as a theme fits nicely with efforts by the Truckee Donner Land Trust and the Trust for Public Lands to preserve the northeast section of Martis Valley. The two groups are nearing the end of a yearlong effort to raise $23.5 million to purchase Waddle Ranch, 1,462 privately held acres just north of Hwy. 267. There will be a cluster of opening parties to kick off the Seasons of Martis:

Twelfth Annual Truckee River Day
October 14
The Truckee River Watershed council has planned several exciting restoration projects for this year’s event, including work in Prosser Creek, the Davies/Merrill watershed, Martis Valley, Russell Valley and Gray Creek. There will be activities appropriate for the whole family and a River Day Fair at Granite Flat Campground at the end of the day featuring food, exhibits and a trout release at 4 p.m. Kids should bring a clean bucket if they want to participate.
