March Watershed Film Series

Presented by the Upper Truckee River Watershed Stewardship Group, this film, A River Reborn: Restoration of Fossil Creek chronicles the efforts of a group of scientists, conservationists and community members to decommission a hydroelectric dam in central Arizona, and return an altered and impaired ecosystem to a beautifully restored, naturally functioning state. Skiing for Schools
On selected days, the participating resorts are offering skiers and snowboarders special discounted lift tickets. The proceeds from your lift ticket purchase go directly to the Excellence in Education Foundation, a private, nonprofit corporation that supports quality education within the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. Each year the Foundation raises money and provides grants, resources and partnerships to benefit students, teachers and the educational community as a whole.

Observe Women’s History Month

The Rainbow Bridge celebrates ‘Women’s Art/Women’s Vision,’ the Women’s History Month theme, by hosting a gathering with Tahoe-Truckee area artists Cathy McClelland and Karen Frances, and Reno children’s book author Terry Lowey at the store in the Village at Squaw. McClelland’s paintings, giclees, matted prints and cards will be on display during the festivities and she will share her enthusiasm and inspiration. Illustrator Karen Frances and author Terri Lowey will be at the store to sign copies of their new children’s book, ‘The Secret of the Wizard’s Wand,’ which teaches the power of positive thinking. Visitors can sip a complementary glass of organic wine from Uncorked and enjoy refreshments while admiring the women’s work. From 4 to 7 p.m. at the Village at Squaw in the Fountain Court. Climate Change Café

The Nevada coalition for climate Protection invites you to an inspiring community forum for examining how we approach the issue of global warming. Modeled after World Café (theworldcafe.com), the Climate Change Café is a discussion technique used worldwide for hosting conversations about questions that matter, the process encourages inquiry and discovery. The goals of café-style conversations are to make visible the collective intelligence of any group and help articulate the community’s common aims. These cafe’s will help us all move from conversation to action as we decide individually and collectively what we can do to address climate change. Free admission (donations appreciated). Loss and Trauma in the Young

Gain a greater understanding of how children ages 1 to 5 deal with trauma and loss of a loved one or pet. Learn how loss and trauma effect young children and discover how to minimize those effects. Find new ways to facilitate coping skills. Designed for childcare providers and parents, this class is part of a series sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Child Development, U.C. Davis and funded by the Child Development Division of the California Department of Education. The class will be taught in Spanish on March 15 and in English on April 12. Sign up now to be a part of The North Lake Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival, which has quickly become the largest environmental event in the region, combining world-class musical entertainment, stimulating speakers and over 50 booths featuring non profit organizations, local, state and federal agency representatives and green businesses. It provides an engaging opportunity to teach and to learn about recycling/composting, alternative energy, sustainability, watershed and forest health and more. This sixth year of this Earth Day event will focus on ways to reduce our impacts to combat climate change and will strive to be a Zero Waste and ‘Carbon Neutral’ event. If your vehicle failed to pass its biannual smog check inspection there is help available. The Department of Consumer Affairs’ Bureau of Automotive Repair provides financial assistance to qualified applicants to repair or retire a registered vehicle through their Smog Check Consumer Assistance Program (CAP).
