Thank you Tahoe!
I have grown up in Tahoe and I never realized how close-knit our community was until I ran for Snowfest! Queen. In the process of selling tickets, I realized that almost everyone I asked was willing to purchase a small amount of tickets to contribute to the cause. I would like to thank everyone who supported me and the Tahoe Cross Country Ski Education Association in this endeavor. I appreciate all the support I was given and it would not have happened without the wonderful support of our community. Thanks so much!

A Community That Gives
All of us who have chosen to live in the North Tahoe-Truckee area are very fortunate. We are surrounded by inspiring vistas of mountains, rivers, lakes, and forests.

But more importantly, we are part of an environment that prides itself in having a ‘sense of community’ where everyone feels they ‘belong.’ We all love the small town mentality and familiarity we share, as opposed to living in anonymity in urban centers.

When a neighbor or friend has a crisis, the community comes together overwhelmingly to help out. All of us have been affected in one way or another by our country’s current economic downturn. But for many of us we just tighten our belts and spend money only on necessities. But there are people in our community that are struggling just to meet their day-to-day needs. Our local nonprofit organizations who help these individuals have seen their budgets shrink and are fighting just to stay alive. Their very survival is threatened.

We have a community foundation that has recognized this plight and has decided to do something immediately to alleviate the local health and human services crisis. The Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation has organized local volunteers who will be calling residents the evening of Sunday, March 15, asking them to give. When you get a call, realize that the people calling you are your neighbors, friends, and local residents just like you who have decided to help. Open your hearts and pocket books and give what you can, so that others can enjoy the same wonderful quality of life that all of living us here cherish and value so much. If you would like to help, either by calling or giving a donation, contact Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation: 530-587-1776, ttcf.net.

Regarding the 3rd place winner
(Response to: ‘How Be Local Winners!’ Moonshine Ink 500 essay contest)
It’s beautifully written and makes me want to visit such a wonderful example of a city close to nature.

Tahoe Lake School
(Response to: ‘Mrs. Farr: Queen of Tahoe Lake School,’ by Tim Hauserman)
Thanks Tim, for all the additional memories brought back of our glorious childhood at Tahoe Lake School. The kids today will never know what they missed, as those were the days when kids could truly be kids…and still ‘get learned.’

Shouldn’t have dropped the swap
(Response to: ‘Preschools in Crisis,’ by Melissa Siig)
It is a shame that TCNS dropped the ski swap. That was a major source of income for them, and they opted to give it up, and now have no major fundraiser, which was a major part of the budget. Now they are struggling and yet unwilling to raise rates. Now North Tahoe Schools took over the swap and they are still making $25,000 annually from that fund raiser. Paying the price now. Raise rates or cut salaries, even management.

Amen!
(Responses to: ‘Skinny Bitch,’ by Keaven Van Lom)
Kev, great review and great book. I’ve got it, picked it up on a layover from Chicago back to Nashville, read it, laughed and kicked myself and agreed with a lot of it. It’s a must-read for anyone wanting to feel better (and look better).

I Thought You Were 30! No Kidding.

I always stay away from low fat because to me it just means they add more sugar. Boy I sure do have a 50 lb. lump on front side to get rid of, so I think I will read the book…

That is great!

It is nice to know people that you respect more every time they remind you they are your friends.

We love our CSA box!
(Response to: ‘CSAs, The Farmer’s Face,’ by Gary Romano)
We have been subscribing to the Mountain Bounty CSA program since last summer, and it has completely opened my eyes on how to think about produce. Not only are we introduced to many new veggies and fruit, but it’s super fresh and has real flavor. It makes shopping at the grocery store completely pale in comparison. Yes, there are times when I have to get creative in order to figure out how to eat things, but I figure that’s a good skill to have anyhow. And I love the idea of supporting small farms. It’s good, and it’s good for you!

Responsibility to Future Generations
(Response to: ‘Royal Gorge,’ by Tim Hauserman)
To the current owners: at one point it must have seemed like that right thing to buy this property and build condos, but at this point if I were you I would take care of this resort the best you can and restore it to functioning like it did in the past. I am trying to convince my baby-boomer friends that Nordic skiing, once you get into it, is more exciting and interesting than Alpine (and I do both). Sitting on lifts is boring – with XC you are in constant motion. Your adrenaline is up and so are your endorphins. I am going to have a hard time convincing my friends to go if I can’t take them to Devil’s peak.  Some day in the future, do you want to be remembered as those who ruined Royal Gorge, or those who kept it the best and biggest place for XC in North America?
