If you need to detox from the holiday season with a little laughter, Tahoe Comedy North may be just the antidote you are looking for. Headliner Tina Kim and feature performer Tonya Kaye will have you grabbing your side and falling out of your seat in no time.
But what, may you ask, makes this estrogen-infused duo’s performance funnier than all the rest?
‘Well, I don’t talk about PMS, I don’t do breast jokes and I’m not a man-hater,’ confesses Kim. ‘All ethnicities and races can relate to me because my material is universal. I talk about dating, life, family, being single and the internet. I have a lot of stuff about the internet.’
I noticed marriage jokes didn’t make the menu, so I had to ask: ‘Are you hitched?’ ‘No, but I desperately want to be. Time flies when you’re doing what you love, but I do want to get married and have kids,’ says Kim. ‘All I want is a guy that’s not a cheater or a liar.’
Kim was a former television news reporter in Montana who started her comedy career in New York. As if being at the mercy of the public on local television wasn’t bad enough, what made her want to get into comedy? ‘In comedy I am able to say what I feel, I’m not censored. You wouldn’t believe how liberating that is,’ she said.
It has been said that the truth is the very thing that makes people laugh, and I asked if Kim agreed with that statement. Without hesitation she said ‘Absolutely – 100 percent. The reason my material is so funny is because it is true. I reveal that to the audience through my stories, and make them a part of my experience so that they feel like they are right there looking at the story unfold before them. My stories have to be true because I am not clever enough to come up with tales that crazy on my own.’
I have always wondered if there is a bit of tragedy in comedy, in the sense that they no longer find other people funny. ‘I will admit it; very few people are funny to me. I think people falling down are hilarious for some reason, but other than that, it takes a lot to make me laugh,’ she says. She shouldn’t have any problem laughing her head off in a ski town.
