If you’re wondering how to get rid of that geriatric VCR or computer without dumping it where it will leach its toxic contents into the Tahoe Basin, tireless Town of Truckee Recycling Coordinator Nichole Dorr has the answer. In a recent press release, she lists several recycling opportunities in the Tahoe/Truckee area for electronic waste as well as for universal and hazardous household waste.
• The Eastern Regional Landfill (ERL) accepts both Electronic and Universal waste all year long free of charge. E-waste includes computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, cell phones, radios, telephones, and fax machines.
U-Waste includes household batteries, fluorescent lamps and bulbs, empty aerosol cans, and any item containing mercury. Mercury exposure is toxic to people, pets and the environment, but recyclers can recapture the mercury in fluorescent lamps and bulbs when you bring them to the ERL rather than breaking them to fit into household trash. Northstar Lighting and Mountain Hardware in Truckee also accept residential fluorescent lamps and bulbs for free recycling.

• Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), which includes household cleaning products, automotive chemicals, paints and varnishes, poisons, and any product that has a danger or warning type label, may be dropped off at one of these free HHW collection events:

• August 16 -30
• September 13-27
• October 11
• November 8
