Wondering where to go after the Phish show in South Lake Tahoe? The smoking funk and jazz of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe will carry your apres-Phish dancing shoes into the late hours of the night.
A grooving genius on the flute and saxophone, Denson has a knack for improv and melody. With a foot in three bands, the Greyboy Allstars and Karl Denson Trio in addition to the Tiny Universe, Denson is a busy man. This summer alone, he’s hopping across the nation hitting festivals from coast to coast including stops in Colorado, Las Vegas, Canada, West Virginia, and Denson’s hometown of San Diego. On Aug. 9, Denson is gracing the Basin for the first annual Booty Shake in South Lake, brought to you by production company Fresh Bakin’.
Expect high-energy music from Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, which also features Brian Jordan (guitar), Chris Littlefield (trumpet), John Staten (drums), Chris Stillwell (bass), and David Veith (keyboards).
‘My style is based in dance,’ Denson says on his website. ‘I love the idea of creating something that naturally makes people want to move.’
In a truly diverse festival presented la carte, Mama’s Cookin’ will be joining Denson at MontBleu on Aug. 9. EOTO will also be playing in a separate room. On the second night following Phish, stop by MontBleu for Lotus and Big Gigantic, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, and DJ Coop da Loop.
