Do you suffer from the same kind of musical tastes all the time? Do you feel like you can’t make up your mind as to what style of music best defines you? How about some ‘attention-deficit-disorder-rock’? Welcome to the world of Forrest Day. Backed up by Terrell Liedstrand (guitar/vocals), John Sankey (bass), Jasper Skydecker (drums), and Nick Wyner (keyboard/vocals), Forrest Day is making his way up to the Tahoe area, bringing with him a distinct Bay Area stream of inspiration. I recently caught up with Forrest Day the man to discuss the band’s history, style, and local appearances. Here’s what he had to say.
Moonshine Ink: How would you describe your musical style?
Forrest Day: There is no straight answer for this. On a song-to-song basis you can analyze what style it is. I would call it a mixture of rock, hip hop, jazz, funk, punk.
MI: What makes your sound unique? What keeps it fresh?
FD: The way the genres are infused and the particular mixture we have makes it unique. I like the freedom in this band. Our listeners don’t have a set thing that they expect from us. They expect the unexpected. It makes me want to write things that are all over the place. Whatever fascinates me at the time.
MI: Who are your musical influences?
FD: Growing up, I listened to a lot of jazz from Stan Getz to Charlie Parker. I love Sinatra, Jay-Z, Radiohead, early Modest Mouse, and Aesop Rock. My style is a mixture of all that.
MI: What can people expect from one of your live shows?
FD: Our live performances are the best part of our vibe. It’s all about our live shows — they are high energy and exciting.
MI: Do you have a new CD out or are you in the studio?
FD: We will be in the studio again soon. We have our new album coming out in the fall. That same album is streaming free on our website, forrestday.com.
MI: What do you know about the Mountain Vibe Music Gathering?
FD: It’s gonna be cool. We did it last year and the weather was really cruddy. We had to take four-wheel vehicles through water with our gear out there due to the weather conditions. This year, they moved it to Shinneyboo, which is a beautiful spot and much easier to access. I expect a great night. There are some great bands from the East Bay. ~ Ryan Salm/Moonshine Ink
