Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness — these are the 5 Rhythms. A practice that uses movement to still the mind and express individual emotion, 5 Rhythms was created in the 1960s by Gabrielle Roth. There is no choreography and the instructor does not lead, he only guides participants through the wave of the 5 Rhythms. From quiet meditation to strong, angular poses, dancers follow the music from one rhythm to another.
‘I like to call it dancing from the inside out,’ said Laurie Martin, a board member at Truckee’s InnerRhythms Dance Studio.
InnerRhythms is proud to present a 5 Rhythms dance workshop from Nov. 5 to 7 that will feature Eugene Hedlund, a certified 5 Rhythms teacher from Orange County, Calif. This is the third time Hedlund will visit Truckee to share his knowledge of dance and 5 Rhythms. This workshop, titled ‘Message in a Bottle,’ will study the Lyrical movement, which features playful, creative and self-seeking dance. ‘The Lyrical is the letting go of the letting go,’ said Martin, who upon meeting Hedlund at Burning Man discovered 5 Rhythms.
‘5 Rhythms is a big deal,’ said Martin, noting that there are less than a thousand certified 5 Rhythms instructors in the nation. No experience in dance or movement is necessary. All that is required is an open heart, a sense of humor, and compassion, especially for yourself.
