Flip’s Friends
Not even the storm of the century could keep this intrepid reporter from his appointed rounds. With
forecasters calling for calling for Donner Party-type weather I started to wonder about how my pals at the shelter were holding up.
One of my people went down to the shelter without me and checked things out. Big mistake. He took two dogs for a walk, which was nice, but he lost Sally. Sally is a handsome German Shepherd mix. She was staying at the shelter before she headed back to her foster home. Sally is a little timid and when he let her off her leash for just a second she was gone. He tried to chase her in the deep snow but ended up in snow over his waist. I wish I could have seen that. Exhausted and wet he headed back to the shelter without Sally. The girl may be timid but she is no dummy. She was inside resting comfortably on her bed by the time he got back. That will teach you for trying to cover Flip’s friends without Flip.
The next day we headed to the shelter as a family. We were greeted by Nanette Cronk, animal programs manger for the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. After the wild day in the snow yesterday we asked Nanette for the
easiest, friendliest dog she had. She introduced us to Abby.
Abby is a one-year old Staffordshire Terrier. She comes to Truckee from Reno where she was rescued by HSTT from death row. Staffordshire terriers are a type of Pit Bull and Abby is a great representative. She is friendly, easy going, and well-behaved. Abby went on a snowshoe to the Truckee River with my whole family. We met some folks and some other dogs and everyone got along great. Don’t let the diamond-studded collar and the big muscles fool you. Abby is a lover not a fighter. My sister Olive put her to the test by wrestling and harassing Abby. She was not fazed by her obnoxious behavior, though I was a little annoyed.
Abby takes her treats nice. You can offer he the smallest piece of food and she will take it nice without chewing your hand in the process. She was happy to sit and come for cookies. I am sure with a little training she can learn a whole bunch of new tricks. I was actually thinking of trading Olive in for her. (I would never really do that but sometimes its fun to think about.)
Abby would be a great addition to your family. She loves to exercise and play and is happy to lie around and snuggle in the evenings. Despite her low ground clearance she would make a great skiing or hiking companion.
I would like to give a big thank you to all the volunteers and staff at HSTT for braving the elements and looking after my friends during the recent storms. No matter what the weather Carol, Nanette, Catherine and company make sure everyone is happy and healthy.
