A mixology of high altitude gadfly gossip for oxygen starved brain cells

Welcome back to The Mix. Only the highly astute – or slightly mad – may have noticed that The Mix was not included in the December issue, due to the publisher needing space for editorial content. Can you imagine The Mix getting nixed for actual content? Brother.

So to resume our fodder: An enormous ‘thank you’ goes out to all the Christians, Buddhists, Mormons, pagans, Scientologists, Zoroastrians, witches, Dominionists, nudists, and The Church of What’s Happening Now for praying to the snow Gods. Your prayers were answered with enough snow prior to the holidays to bring in mobs of tourists, wet the terrain, grace us with a white Christmas, and probably keep many a small business from having to close their doors. With snow levels at about 78 percent of what they should be at this time, we ardently request your continued meditations to the great beyond.

With all the tourists in town over the holidays, the roads in Tahoe City and Truckee were a zoo, yet how can one curse the plethora of autos when we so need the bodies inside of them? I’m always aghast at that ‘Keep Tahoe Local’ bumper sticker I see plastered on some cars and can only postulate that the car’s owner is too young or naïve to realize that we live in a resort area, and resort areas need tourists to actually exist. Please, take an Economics 101 class at some of our fine local colleges. If you want a beautiful resort area just to yourself, you’ll have to manifest the success of The Donald so you can purchase your own island and do whatever you want – alone, sad, deprived of intellectual stimulation, and craving Jiffy’s Pizza. Sigh. But perhaps you argue, ‘If the people who live here are people who own their homes, then there is great impetus to be a steward of the land.’ I see your argument through the haze of my jaded perceptual filters oh young, naive one. Tis an age-old argument Mr. Bumper-sticker-plaster-on-er; one that I think might never be resolved?

To soothe the argument, let’s all go to Fair & Green in Truckee for the Fair Trade Chocolate Tasting on Feb. 7 – truffles, yum!

On a more serious note, our thoughts, prayers and well wishes go out to Nanci and Jessica Davis, and all their friends and family. Nanci’s 21-year old son, Randy Davis, was killed on Christmas day in an avalanche at Squaw. The family has been enduring very hard times as of late. Nanci’s husband, Bud Davis, passed away just one year ago. Since Nanci owns The Sawtooth Ridge Café in Tahoe City, you can stop by for a delicious lunch or breakfast and show your support for our dear neighbor. And friends, always remember that though we live in a beautiful area, there can be great risk in some of our mountain activities. Be safe.

SnowFest is around the corner, February 27 through March 8, so watch for all the fun events, which absolutely will not work well in Hawaiian shirts.  Keep praying! Happy New Year North Tahoe/Truckee. Let’s make it a great year, and be sure to drink – and read – lots of Moonshine.
