The InnerRhythms Dance Theatre believes in the arts. They believe the arts are a gift, a universal language, a window to the soul. And by offering dance classes, programs, and opportunities for community outreach, InnerRhythms has gone beyond simply believing in the arts to spreading their faith to the daily lives of much of Truckee Tahoe.
Now, it’s your turn to believe in InnerRhythms Dance Theatre.
Put on your favorite pair of blue jeans and come down to the theatre’s signature fundraising event, Appetizers for the Arts. This year’s theme is cabernet and cowboy boots, a theme that celebrates Truckee’s Western spirit. A handful of local restaurants including Moody’s, Dragonfly, Sunnyside, Elijah Blue, Big Water Grille, and Twin Peaks Catering, will be serving up delicious treats, while regional wineries and Fifty Fifty Brewing Company pour the beverages. Line dancing lessons will be offered. And, of course, performances by InnerRhythms Dance Theatre will be featured.
‘[InnerRhythms] provides a great many positive activities for youth and adults focused on people’s physical and mental well-being,’ said Robbin Goebel, a member of the theatre’s board of directors. ‘We believe dance is not just entertainment, it’s also a healthy activity for youth and adults.’
This fundraiser is critical, said Goebel. While the theatre receives some revenue from class fees, a major portion of funding comes from donations, community support, and grants. All the proceeds from Appetizers for the Arts will be used to develop youth programs in the community, she said.
One such program is very near and dear to Goebel’s heart: InnerActions. A multimedia presentation for high school audiences, InnerActions uses hip hop to share a message about preventing substance abuse, depression, alcohol and drug abuse, bullying, and discrimination. The performance, which is choreographed by InnerRhythms’ Ryan Curren and features a cast of local and Northern California high school students, has been performed in all of the local high schools as well as Washington D.C. and San Diego.
