Tahoe Forest Hospice Thrift and Gift Store Expands Hours
Located at 10026 Meadow Way, the Truckee branch of the Hospice Thrift Store is now open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. They sell a variety of merchandise and take donations in good condition, including small kitchen appliances, furniture, clothing, books, and house-wares. (No ski equipment, please.) Tahoe Independence Day Celebrations Galore
From Incline to Truckee the long holiday weekend will be filled with cheering and laughter and the nights’ skies will be ablaze with fireworks. Incline Village and Crystal Bay have planned a series of events, dubbed ‘Red, White and Tahoe Blue,’ beginning June 30 and continuing through July 8. A duel of fireworks displays begins at 9 p.m. on July 4 at the Village Green. Squaw Valley Fireworks Extravaganza is Tuesday, July 3 at 9 p.m. and spectators will enjoy a pre-fireworks concert. Kings Beach fireworks, best be seen from the Kings Beach State Recreation Area and the North Tahoe Conference Center, begin at 9 p.m. and Northstar-at-Tahoe hosts an afternoon of live music and a children’s parade on July 3. Mine children’s store will provide decorations for your bike, dog, scooter or big wheel. Tahoe City celebrates at 9:30 p.m. on the Fourth at Commons Beach. Truckee’s festivities begin with a hometown parade at 10 a.m. and continue into the night with quite possibly the best fireworks display ever, at 9 p.m., over Donner Lake. West End Beach access is limited to local residents and homeowners. Purchase tickets in advance at Truckee Donner Recreation and Parks District.
Firewood Season Opens in the Tahoe National Forest
Firewood permits for the Tahoe National Forest are available for $15 per cord (with a two-cord minimum and an annual ten-cord maximum per household) at all Ranger Stations, the Forest Headquarters or by mail. An Incandescent-free Truckee
Join the Truckee Climate Action Network (TCAN) at Mountain Hardware, Friday, June 15 as they launch an incandescent-fluorescent light bulb change-out program, called The Summer Light Switch. The program provides a way to reduce carbon emissions and lower electric bills by providingTruckee residents with free compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). Additionally, residents can participate in the Truckee Donner PUD’s rebate program and receive a $2 credit on their electric bill for every new CFL they purchase and install in their homes. truckeecan.com, 582-3931.
Masquerade Jewelry Fundraiser
The Tahoe Forest Hospital Auxiliary will be holding a Masquerade Jewelry Fundraiser, Thursday, June 28 and Friday, June 29 in the Hospital’s Dietary Conference Room from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to benefit the hospital departments and programs. Jewelry and accessories will cost $5.

Truckee Mom Has All The Right Moves
Congratulations to Patty Brooke for winning ‘Dancing with the Moms Challenge’ on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ and to Truckee for supporting her all the way to the top. Brooke, a 54-year-old, longtime Truckee resident and single mother of three, showed the voters how she can dance, and the community’s votes showed us what we can achieve when we pull together.
Free Chipping Service
Defensible space needs to be created and maintained around your home. Truckee Fire District is committed to helping by providing a free chipping service.
• Chipping is done on a first come first serve basis with priority given to groups of parcels or neighbors working together.
• Materials that can be chipped include limbs, small trees and brush.
• Limbs/brush need to be neatly stacked with the stub or cut end towards the road.
• No dirt or rocks on brush root balls
• Material needs to be stacked alongside the road or driveway where truck and trailer can safely access them without causing any damage to the property.
• All materials will be either chipped into a pile or broadcast onto the property per the owner’s request.
