(12.05.10 UPDATE: Deadline has been extended to May 18, 2012.)
Presented by Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, Moonshine Ink and Switchback PR + Marketing, Inc
SUBMIT AN ESSAY OR VIDEO FOR A CHANCE TO WIN $500
Who: Contest is open to all TTUSD 11th and 12th grade students
What: A journalistic project, both written and visual. The topic is ‘What Moves You?’ and encourages students to write about what moves you to be a better person: your passions, interests, influential people, or…? There are two categories: Written Word and Video, and winners in each category will receive a $500 prize. (See ‘Submission Guidelines,’ below).
Where: Get published in Moonshine Ink! Finalists will have the opportunity to see themselves in print or online at moonshineink.com.
When: Submission deadline is May 11, 2012. The June 2012 issue of Moonshine Ink will publish finalists and winning submissions.
How: A panel will select finalists and Moonshine Ink will publish selected entries in the June 2012 issue and online. There will be one winner in each category.
Why: In October 2010, our community lost a great friend in long time Lake Tahoe local and all-around Tahoe man Robert ‘Fro’ Frohlich. A writer, journalist, and author, Fro was passionate about skiing, kids, writing, dogs, and the High Sierra (not necessarily in that order). Fro’s words and prose graced the pages of books, magazines, newspapers and websites near and far for the last three decades. It is in his honor that this contest is presented, with Fro’s sister, Margaret Frohlich Pearcy offering up the prize money.
Submission Guidelines: Written submissions should be 750 words or less; video submissions 5 minutes or less. Submissions in Spanish will be accepted; but because our jury is not bilingual, we will provide translation services. If you prefer, you may translate your own. Videos may be in slide show format. We accept only e-mail submissions. Submit your work to whatmovesyou@moonshineink.com by May 11, 2012. A jury panel made up of journalism professionals and other individuals will choose finalists in two categories: Written Word and Video. Two winners (one from each category) will be chosen by jury; each winner will receive $500. Because all submissions must be sent via e-mail, we prefer to receive as attachments—do not paste submission into the email. All submissions must be accompanied by our submission form (a fillable pdf), which can be downloaded below.
Need help creating a video? If you have great story but are not sure how to transfer it to film or don’t have equipment, Arts For the Schools can hook you up with screenplay workshops and a film crew at no cost! Also in addition to submitting to ‘What Moves You’ contest, you may also submit your film project to Arts For the Schools Student Film Festival. Info: Raine Howe, (530) 582-8278 or rhowe@artsfortheschools.org.
Deadline: May 11, 2012
