In response to New Truckee Pregnancy Center Opens Amid Questions in the August print edition

Don’t Take Women Back Decades

Shaming girls/women into giving birth is 100% wrong. Planned Parenthood offers medical services and has actually prevented more births than they have ended. That’s what we need –– promotion of birth control, not the promotion of family planning and anti-abortion. Why do we keep going backwards in this realm? It’s painful.

What Comes After the Baby Is Born?

How much help do they offer? Do they offer services for mothers after they convince them to have the baby –– housing, clothing, day care, post-natal help? Or do they just do enough to ensure a birth? Does compassion end after birth? That is the Christian way, after all.

Women Need Support Without an Agenda

When people are facing an unplanned pregnancy, they need unbiased support. The reason why some people have an issue with this is fear of a biased opinion based off religious values instead of the individual person’s wants and needs.

In response to Was North Tahoe a Victim of a July Fourth Takeover? in the August print edition

Don’t Hate on Visitors

I also live in Carnelian Bay, 32 years in Tahoe, 27 in our neighborhood. Does that make me a “local?” We also rent a room in our house to Airbnb. We had a lovely couple stay with us. There were two houses on our street packed with kids. The house next door isn’t a rental, it’s a vacation home and the owners were partying just like any renter might. You can’t blame that on STRs. Was it noisy and annoying? Yea, a bit, but totally expected and it was back to normal the following days. I feel like this becomes a local versus visitor issue and smells of entitlement on both sides. I even heard someone say Tahoe needs to build a wall. It’s this attitude that really gets me. I’m tired of the hate for tourism. We literally survive on it. We have to share our beautiful slice of paradise and instead of getting angry and possessive, we need to be prepared and have the necessary infrastructure in place. I stayed away from the crowds and went for a hike in the woods that busy Saturday. I saw maybe two other people on the trails.

Not All STRs Are Bad

People who operate good STRs should not be lumped in [with] the bad ones. Cabins have been rented at the lake for many, many years. Now they are regulated. The regulations that Placer County has implemented are very stringent. Also, unruly teenagers can come up for the day. The problem is the behavior of people who don’t respect their surroundings.

Beaches Are Too Busy Now

I’ve lived a few miles from the lake for years. When I was a young man, I used to haul my Hobie up to Sand Harbor, unload it and park my car and trailer in the lot. The ranger usually helped me put up the mast. I usually arrived around 7 a.m. on Saturdays during the summer. Sailed and sat on the beach until around 2 and went home. Can’t do that anymore. Too crowded.

In response to Truckee Football’s History of Greatness in the August print edition

Team Deserves a Better Stadium

When will they get real lights? The stadium needs a renovation. A program like this deserves it. Just wish we could improve the conditions of the stadium. Truckee deserves better. A real bathroom would be nice. Better bleachers, better handicap access, just to name a few. We all love Surprise Stadium but it needs an upgrade. Not just for football but for all sports played there.

One Supermarket Is Not Enough

In desperate need of a second grocery store. Safeway is consistently decimated. Man, a Trader Joe’s there would be a dream.

In response to the news brief Boatworks Files for Bankruptcy posted online Aug. 12

Boatworks Is a Special Place

This one hurts. I worked on the building of it during the ’70s and I ran the mechanic shop at Tahoe Boat Company for several years. My wife and I decided to get married at Hacienda, we had our wedding rings made at the jeweler there, Jake’s was always a special place. Hopefully it will remain a Tahoe City landmark and not fall prey to the condo craze.
