Make Workforce Housing Pencil for Developers
Author hits the nail on the head: “From a revenue and fee perspective, our current system provides incentives to build luxury homes.”
So, how to build workforce housing? We can start by making it more cost-effective for developers to do so.
- Prioritize the construction of entry-level sale housing rather than rental apartments.
- Provide expedited planning and building permit review, at low to no cost, by all reviewing agencies, for those projects meeting workforce housing criteria.
- Opposition to workforce housing projects (i.e., NIMBY-ism) must be disregarded by public officials if the proposed projects meets area plan and code requirements.

Nobody Wants to Live in Apartments
Apartment after apartment after apartment — no one wants apartments, and they are expensive. Reno and Washoe are an unaffordable mess.

Big Houses Don’t Help
Because we think everyone wants an apartment. Because the planning departments are okay with nearly every new home in the last 30 years being a massive home. How many single-story ranches are built anymore? How many homes built are massive spec homes? We claim to be a green-conscious community, but we have massive homes that are heated and empty most of the year.
